Fuel Efficiency

Of all the upgrades available, are there any suggestions for creating a sporty fuel saver?

I want to keep, or even add to, the fun, but I don't need to decrease the MPG.

Well, the MINI engineers didn't leave a lot on the table, efficiency-wise, so you're not likely to increase your gas mileage with any type of bolt-on mods.

You can concentrate on suspension/handling mods, and driving schools - both of those will add to the enjoyment of your car without affecting fuel efficiency (other than possible changes in your driving habits - grin).

I saw a slight, but nevertheless noticeable, improvement after adding the ALTA cold air intake and boost tubes upgrade. Would make sense, since a engine that can 'breathe' better should perform more efficiently. I've also read here on NAM that ALTA's turbo back exhaust reaps an improvement in fuel efficiency for the same reason.

All of these mods certainly add to the fun as they sound/look great and perform even better.

So if I added an ALTA CAI, tubes, and the Catback Exhaust, I should actually improve my MPG (if my driving habits remain the same )

Talk about a win-win!

Add intake and exhaust, but don't use the added power.

What kind of gas mileage are you currently getting? How much do you want to improve it?

I'm getting a smidge over 32mpg in my '07 MCS... I'm fairly satisfied with that. Peppy, agile, and economical. A combination that's hard to beat.

I'm getting a little more than 31mpg and I have Alta turbo back exhaust, intake, and intercooler

I believe the JCW Stage 1 kit also adds power w/o any sacrifice of fuel economy (if you're wanting to take the OEM route).

Thanks

Thanks for the words. It looks consistant that opening the in-flow and exhaust of air is the way to go. I am not complaining about the current MPG, but I want to make sure that I will not be decreasing my MPG by the numerous possible after-market add ons. Like most people, I would like a 1000HP machine that gets 60MPG. It seems that with a boost in HP many take a hit in the fuel efficiency.

With 200 miles on the clock I am getting 30 but I am driving back roads to keep the rpms all over the place through break in. Also the traffic was terrible this morning and I think it dropped to 28.5 mpg.

my 2007 cooper s got 39-40 mpg on the highway off the dealers show room.
I have since done the JCW stage one, Alta intercooler, a few other things and some suspension work, my mileage dropped 4 miles per gallon, but the grin facter under excelleration is way up. I also lost a couple miles per gallon when I put on the winter tires.
Other than intake and exaust for better breathing, I don't think you can add HP with out some loss in mileage

The fact that after you mod it you tend to drive it harder doesn't really help with the gas mileage either.

Was is a noticeable performance difference with the ALTA boost tube upgrades?

Calculated or OBC? Huge difference between the two.

I get 33 and a fraction, calculated, with runflats and no mods. That's on an S.

I calculate my mileage, my OBC is way off.

Does everyones calculated display low or high? Since my last fill up im getting 15.9 as of last night. I drive the hell out of it at all opportunities. Just wondering if I'm actually doing better or worse than that. Ohhh..and my car has 800 miles.

Have you reset the OBC, if you're going to use it at all?

As for the break-in period, I saw about 2-3 mpg increase when I got past about 1500 miles.

Unfortunately I can't speak for the efficiency or performance of the boost tubes in particular (quite a number of people have asked since they don't seem to be a very popular mod) as I had them installed at the same time as the ALTA CAI.

Wow - I drive my MINI like I stole it pretty much everyday, yet I've never gotten dipped below the 20MPG mark (and found that to be appalling ). And this is for a MCSa, although it has 2900 miles on it so I'm sure that helps.

Unless you're autocrossing every mile, there's absolutely no reason that the R56's Prince engine should get mileage that low!
