As gokartride said, if you have an automatic you'll need to be carefull of the sport button in full automatic mode. You'll easily go over the 4500 RPM limit in full automatic with it on. However, you can drive it in manual mode with the sport mode engaged to keep it below the recommended RPM limit.
If you have a manual, no worries , just have fun!

From the online owners manual:
Pressing the [sport] button causes your MINI to respond even more sportily.
Those MINI Marketers must've had a hand in writing the manual.
Then it says:
Engine responds more spontaneously to movements of the accelerator.
Steering response is more direct.
With automatic transmission: More rapid gear shifting in Sport program

I hate it when I forget to turn it on when I am in a parking lot. The car just doesn't want to drive smoothly at low rpm's without the sport button on!!!!!!
IMO, it is a designing flaw that needs to be fixed with a software upgrade. I feel a huge difference with the button on and off in terms of throttle and steering. I always leave it on. My MINI has about 950miles.

In english...
The variable ratio steering is more aggressive.
The shifts are at higher RPMs (But I was totally unaware that there's any delta in shift times, and I really doubt that this is the case, but who knows!)
