R56 Rear fogs
Rear fogs
My MCS has all the toggles in place except for the rear fog lights. I am thinking maybe I can get them after the fact. Does anyone know if the dealer can put them in aftermarket and complete my toggle switch collection? I hate having one missing! Plus I do like the way the rear fogs look. Since I bought off the lot I didnt have a choice in the matter. I'll be sure to ask about it on Friday when I bring the car in to have the sunroof tightened. Darn wind noise! Thanks for the thoughts.
I made sure to get the full toggle panel on my order because I was reading something about the toggle panel being connected to the AC and Speedo and not independent like in the first generation MINIs. I'm sure you can get it done, but it might get expensive; hopefully I'm wrong. Good luck.

That's interesting. (But why?) Does that mean you can't order rear fogs through your local MINI dealer there, or that you'd get pulled over and issued a citation for driving one outfitted as such? What if someone moved to the state with the car, would they have to get the rear foglights removed?
The problem you'll run into is that the switch panel is part of the AC control panel, so the necessary replacement bits will probably cost you a decent amount. Otherwise, I'm told the fogs are pre-wired.

I had commented about this once before and Sowellman had the information handy and posted it to here on NAM. My comment was something to the effect about it being silly like how we can't pump our own gas here in Oregon.
I have seen out of state Minis in town with them. I'm thinking of getting one after-market and wiring it as a backup light since that was what I was originally intending it for anyway. I have some family that lives outside of town and it can get very dark out there. Any extra light while backing up would be helpful.
In regards to out of state vehicles getting ticketed for using them. I don't know.
EDIT: I did a quick search and I found the post I was talking about.

Mounting, Wiring and Aiming of Rear Fog Lamps for Motor Vehicles and Trailers
(1) Transportation Safety adopts the mounting requirements for rear fog lamps as follows:
(a) If one lamp is installed, mount the lamp on the left side of the motor vehicle;
(b) If two lamps are installed, mount the lamps symmetrically around the rear centerline of the motor vehicle;
(c) Mount the lamps the same height above the level ground as taillights are mounted;
(d) Measure the mounting height from ground level to the center of the lens of the lamp; and
(e) Do not mount the lamps so they interfere with required motor vehicle lighting.
(2) Transportation Safety adopts the wiring requirements for motor vehicle rear fog lamps as follows:
(a) Rear fog lamps shall be wired so they can only come on when the motor vehicle low beam headlights are on;
(b) A switch shall be installed so rear fog lamps can be turned off or on leaving the low beam of the headlights on; and
(c) A steady burning indicator light shall be wired so it comes on when the rear fog lamps are turned on and mounted in a location it is readily visible to the driver.
(3) Transportation Safety adopts the aiming requirement for motor vehicle rear fog lamp through a horizontal angle from 45 degrees to the left and right of the center of the lamp.

That is very interesting, guess I am glad that I don't live in Oregon anymore, granted I don't have rear fogs. But I have no problem with not being able to pump my own gas. It's kind of silly with the new pumps or when they force you to go inside and wait for your pump to be called in order to pay, but I still don't mind one bit.
So SimpsonGI at least from the sounds of the rule we could wire in our own so long as the don't act as "fog lights". Right?
If you get it done....you'll have to show us pics and tell me where you got it done at

That is my interpretation as well, yes.
Anyone have info?
So has anyone yet had fogs added after the fact? I called a dealer and they said it "could be done"... but that didnt sound too promising.
Anyone? Prices?
Also, anyone have clear lenses added after the fact? I'm sure the rears are easy, but do the fronts require lots of headlight pieces?

This is a related topic but slight twist.....I just like the looks of having the rear fog lights in place. Don't think I would probably ever use them. Does anyone know if you can get just reflectors the size and shape that fit the customized cut-out place where rear fogs would be installed?
I got to use my rear fog on the drive home after picking up my car. I drove through a typical Florida heavy summer storm so turned them on. My wife who was following said all she could see ahead of her were the rear fogs to show where I was.
