Trnsmission noise (squeak), when down shifting.

Hi guys, today I noticed the strangest noise coming of my transmission when I down shifted to second gear. I was trying to use the engine to help me break as I was coming a little hot on a turn.

I had heard the noise (squeaky one), earlier in the week but I did not pay attention to it. My windows were up and I could not tell where it was coming from.

Help, has anyone experienced this? I have only 909 miles on the car. Is this supposed to be part of the break in period?
I told the Service Guy about it and all he said is to give it time.

Thank you.

PS in an happy note, I just got the IPOD adapter installed and it is the best thing ever. I highly recommend it especially if you have the nav package. Now you can have full control over the IPOD...

I think there is a long thread dedicated to this issue with the transmissions. You are doomed for a dealer visit.

What did you pay for the iPod Integration? I think my dealer is quoting $600 installed.

Do a search under "clutch squeak" or "clutch squeal".

Again, this was a well known issue in the R53s and usually led to the replacement of the DMF and clutch.

The noise was heard under a wide range of scenarios and temperatures. One thing is for certain, it should be looked at and documented.

It looks like all of the R53 tranny problems are showing up in the R56 - chattering at idle, squeaking, moaning clutches and groaning lsds.

Does anyone know ifd they made ANY imnprovements to the Getrag between the two generations?

OT:

Robin -

Be very careful of those Centerline RPMs. Several of us had radial cracking occur on them. This was also reported on the NASIOC boards.

Mine cracked with less than 3K miles on them. The cracks occur about three to four inches from the hub across each spoke. Most of the cracking occurred on the front wheels.

Centerline was very nice about replacing them with new rims - but would not refund my money. They also admitted the issue, but could not definitively tell me what caused the problem or if the newer versions were still cracking.

Please make sure to check them often.

Its a common problem. I just dropped my car off to have them look at the very same problem. I'll let you know what they tell me.

I paid around $600 for the IPOD intergration. I think $300 was for the part and the rest for the labor. The service guy said that the car will take floor space for about three hours.

That is that.
Thank you for your help for your help so far everybody. BritBoy I cant wait to see what you are told. I hope all goes well.

As has been mentioned, there has been extensive talk about this here and on other boards. I just started hearing it on mine as well (500 miles and haven't even made the first payment yet). I need to get it in and checked out soon because I've got a road trip planned for the week of July 4th and would hate to have it be in the shop then.

Cranked mine up this morning and listened just to be sure. No noise that I can hear.

Just came back from a trip to Yosemite from the Los Angeles area. Checked mine out and so far no noise from what I can hear after putting over 900 miles on her. I dont have the LSD option so I dont know if that would make a difference?

So far it seems that the "downshift to second" squeal is associated with the LSD.

Seems like the squeal is gone, thanks to a new clutch. Only time will tell.

Hmmm--another bullet Zippeee! has dodged for the moment. I have a 6-speed with LSD, but no sounds whatever on shifting...
