Anyone running custom exhaust? Universal fit mufflers?

I like the idea of adding some tone and volume to my Clubman S exhaust but all I can find are $800-1200 catback systems or the JCW $750 mufflers. I don't see anyone replacing their mufflers with high flow round mufflers like a Dynomax Ultra Flow or something comparable. Anyone running a universal fit muffler?

The stock mufflers measure about 14" long, 6" diameter, and 2.25" pipe inlet/outlet. I found some mufflers that are close to those dimensions that are all pretty affordable. Anyone have experience with these or think they might work?

Dynomax Race Series Bullet 24234 - $42/each
12" body length, 16.5" overall length, 4" diameter

Magnaflow 10415 - $65/each
14" body length, 20" overall length, 4" diameter

Magnaflow 12615 - $87/each
14" body length, 20" overall length, 6" diameter

Pypes M80 MVR200S - $52/each

I would bet any decent muffler shop could get those similarly sized mufflers to fit. My concern is what sort of tone you'd get from them if they are universal fit. A lot more engineering goes into developing a unique tone from the JCW or other branded exhausts specific to the platform.

That's a good point and I scoured youtube looking for Mini's with any of these mufflers and found none! I did find some videos with them on different 4 cylinder engines. May have to let my R55 be the muffler swap guinea pig some day.

If all you want is a sportier sound, I suggest replacing the downpipe and removing the second cat and resonator.
I did that to my clubman and love the sound. For the downpipe, I chose the Evolve Sport Cat Downpipe. It is a 200 cell downpipe with a sport catalytic converter. I also replaced the tips with 4" Magnaflow tips.

That is a pretty cool option! But unfortunately those seem to go for about $600 plus install. I was looking to spend about half that.

WarEagle- I'm looking for the same thing here....all stock exhaust right now....would like to improve the tone and sound....any power increase would be nice. Also, my state does an annual OBD check, so whatever I do must not trigger a CEL. I've thought about just doing a second cat delete and/or a resonator delete, but there isn't much information to go on....and what's out there is so subjective!

I'm not 100% sure but deleting 1 or both cats will likely throw a CEL. You can check YouTube for videos of R56 and R55's with cat and/or resonator deletes. I thought about doing that too but read that resonators help eliminate high pitch tones. I've heard some clips of Mini's with the resonator deleted and it has a high pitch raspy tone and lots of popping. Sounds a little too much like the straight pipe Civics from the late 90's to me.

Right, the second cat can be removed and it won't throw any codes, but changing the first cat to either a straight pipe or high flow cat will "probably" throw codes....just repeating what I've read on NAM. I talked to a mechanic about deleting the resonator and he talked me out of it....for the reason you mentioned.

removing the resonator will give you more growl and no codes. Should be under $100 at a muffler shop

I've used Edelbrock SDT on my 06 MCS and my 13 JCW both with Corvette twin tips from the junkyard. SDT is no longer manufactured and is becoming a sought after collectible in the hot rod world but there are bunch of singles out there on ebay and are reasonably priced. You need center inlet/outlet 2.25/2.5. If you like the exhaust note of a Maserati you will love this.

I just removed the resonator and 2nd cat. I run a 2.5in catless dp as well. The drone makes me pretty self conscious around my neighborhood as it is an upscale LA neighborhood with a lot of old people, but after the exhaust heats up the drone is less raspy and dulled down. I was considering getting at least the 2nd cat put back to muffle the drone a bit, but I'm not sure if over time the sound will get better. It'll be a week on monday so I'll report back later. I do love the sound though and at $50 can't beat it.

Would the resonator delete be considered a midpipe?

This sounds pretty nice! http://youtu.be/x-FwI3Aey8E

Just realized he has a downpipe....

The fellas hard at work! And yes, I have all the windows limo tinted.

Stock stuff removed. Not sure if the JCW was supposed to have some special exhaust or not but this was about as boring sounding as anything I have ever heard.

Carven makes some of the most amazing sounding mufflers for most every type of application.

4" tips fit perfectly into the factory cutouts. Just the edge of the tip exposed where you can see Carven's logo etched into the tops of the tips.

What's going on guys? Lurker, first post / reply. I'm 43 years old and have had some sort of custom exhaust on most everything I have ever owned, and I can't remember ever ordering some pricey bolt on exhaust kit. I have always had an idea what I wanted it to sound like, look like, and went from there. I am new to the world of Mini and just purchased a 2011 Clubman JCW and in typical fashion, in less than 24 hours I was at my favorite muffler shop having it customized. (JR's Muffler Center / Haltom City, Texas). I had them cut everything off from the downpipe back. We installed the smallest Carven R series high flow muffler they had (stainless steel, US made). Then split it off to each side with 4" Carven stainless steel tips fitted perfectly into the factory cutouts. It sounded way better than I had hoped. I will try to have some videos uploaded to my Instagram account (black_label_tools) this weekend now that I got my GoPro mount set up right. It sounds very "tuned", and not like the typical Honda Civic with a big fart can muffler bolted on. Has a surprisingly very deep sound, the dual tips offer a nice balanced note, and there was a nice gain in throttle response while not having to push the exhaust through 3 mufflers. Now it's just 1 small high flow muffler.

I'll try to reply again. My original reply said it needed admin approval for some reason. Yes I have done a lot of exhaust work on cars over 27 years of driving. I am new to Minis but before I bought my 2011 JCW, I already knew what I wanted to do to the exhaust. If this reply posts then I will come back to it with details on what we did. I have never purchased a "box exhaust" for any vehicle and I have always had people ask "who did your exhaust?" because they have all sounded unique. That's something you don't get with box exhausts is that many people run them for some reason. Mainly because they think there is some big secret about exhausts. There isn't most reputable exhaust / muffler shops can help you through what you want done if you just tell them what you are looking for. Let me see if this post actually goes through or you can look me up on Instagram (black_label_tools) and I have some pics and details of the work I did the day after I purchased my mini. Yes I am new to the forum and new to Minis but exhaust work basics are pretty much the same. A 4 cylinder is still a 4 cylinder. 6 is a 6. 8 is an 8, etc. The only thing that really changes the basics as it pertains to sounds are the horizontal engines like Porsche, Subaru, and air cooled VWs. I got my GoPro mount set up finally so I will have some videos uploaded to my IG account and YouTube account as well. Motor on!
