R55 My First Fill Up
My First Fill Up
I filled up my clubman for the first time after 391 miles and put 13.75 gallons which comes out to 28.4 MPG, computer says I am doing 29.9 MPG and this was 50/50 local/highway driving. I am pretty sure my MPG will get better after the break in period is over, I was following the proper break in procedure by keeping under 4500 RPM (Highest I got was 3500 RPM) and below 100 MPH (Highest I got was 75 MPH) Overall, I am happy with my MPG
The computer number is always off by a 1 or 2 a mile or two a gallon. In most cases it reads high.
Check out www.fuely.com it will track you mileage for you and you can note what kind of driving you did for that tank and figure out that the harder you drive it the more fun it will be and that although you may loose a mile a gallon the fun is worth it.
I am averaging on my 2008 about 32.1 MPG overall. Some tanks are down around 27-28 and others are up around 32. all depends on my driving.

I'm getting around 28 to 29 mpg in mostly city driving. I've got about 1400 miles on the car and I'm happy with the mileage also.
My car calculate the mpg consistently 1.6 too high. My 2011 averages in the low 27's with 95% city driving.

So I am close to 600 miles mark and will be done with the break in period in the next 10 days or so, how much should I expect to pay for an oil change from the dealer after 1200 miles? $100?
Don't go to the dealer they will rip you a new one. Find a good indy garage and bring your own oil. Buy the oil while it is on sale.
I'm always amazed at some of these mpg numbers I see. I must either drive more aggressively then I think, or the very few engine mods I have are really killing my mileage. Back when I was 100% stock, I don't remember seeing any numbers higher then 27 mpg overall according to my onboard computer. Now, with my intercooler, forge dv, and nm engineering charge and discharge pipes, I'm getting something like 23 mpg overall. This is on 91 octane gas and ecu has the stock tune on it too. I'll admit though, I'd say I do about 99% of my driving on city streets. I've learned not to sweat it too much and just enjoy the ride
+1 The supplies are hardly cheaper than that.
I filled my clubman for the second time and here is the result: about 28.7 MPG, 391.7 miles driven with 13.649 gallons of unleaded premium gas 91 AKI. However, my computer reads 29.4 MPG.
On the side note, while I was filling it up I noticed something on my fuel cap: Unleaded Gasoline Premium 89 AKI (See Picture below, it was shot with my phone at nighttime)
I thought our clubman needs 91 octane gas and I am kind of confused right now, am I wasting my money by filling it up with 91 octane gas?

Now I am not sure what the 2011 or 2012 manual reads but the previous years manuals (2007-2010) all read - 91 Recommended - there is a big difference between the words "recommended" and "required".
All that being said. I personally use 87 octane from what ever station has the cheapest price. My car runs GREAT on the stuff and i have used that for 70K+ of the 82K+ miles I have on the car. BTW my car is a clubman S.
I have run 91 octane for 12 tanks and found that the car does not run any better on that than on the 87. In fact my mileage was less on the 91 octane tanks than what I get on the 87.
As for carbon build up or other things people will tell you. I have no problems with that being any worse that friends that run only 93 octane fuel. They need to do carbon clean outs (seafoam) just as often as I do and if the smoke coming out is any indication of carbon build up then they have a worse problem than I do.
Now of course this is just my personal experience, but why pay more than you need to for gas.
And Others will tell you it is "mandatory" to run 91 or better but that is simply not the truth.

If the car is pulling timing to run the less knock resistant fuel you are losing some potential.
MPG indication on my 09 justa is similar error to what others mention here. Also spedo MPH is same or worse than I've read on other threads (I am assuming that mp GPS is 'ground truth'. BUT REMEMBER - when calculating MPG (gallons at the pump/miles from the odometer) how do you know those miles are accurate? Honda Corp. Got in a jam a while back for 'cheater' odometers (inflated MPG, warranty expiration issues....) I checked mine against mt Garmin GPS as well as freeway mileposts and found it to be accurate within 1%. Those of you that are watching your MPG may want to check your odo's for accuracy.
I'm in a 2011 loaner R55 S while my JCW is being born and I was at 31MPG calculated while on 91 octane and 33-34MPG calculated on 93 octane. Got the car with 6 miles on the odometer and it's around 900 right now.
I am at little over 1250 miles right now, I tried the sport button for the first time today and I could definitely feel the sportiness however where is my pop and burble when I let the gas off?
The pop burble on my '11 was barely noticeable until I got around 4000 miles on the car. Now, when the engine is at normal operating temperature (after driving for 10 minutes or so), the pop burble is fantastic.
Email me if you want to come in and i will set up an appoitment for you
