Anyone have some "real world" Clubman S gas mileage figures?

I average about 8.5 litres per 100 km, brand-new car with 3400 km on the clock.

LSD + Sportsuspension + 6 MT + 17 inch tires/wheels + normal to sporty driving style.

So .. I believe it's around 28 US MPG or so

So far, we are getting about 29 MPG. We just finished the breakin period a few days ago.

Yeah, it's roughly 27.672309751846167960090172979993 MPG, with seems kind of low. Do you do a lot of city driving?

Yes I do, almost 80% city, the rest is highway.

Note: I never use the Auto Stop/Start-function because I think it's rubbish

So that has a bit of an impact on the fuel economy as well.

Whoa! What's this "Auto Stop/Start" function? Is this on the American version? What does it do and why is it rubbish?

The stop/start function will be on later release 08 North American MINIs. Anyone know the build dates for this?

It is supposed to save fuel by turning the engine off while under braking, then restart when you get back on the throttle. Thank goodness you can turn this off as it does not interest me at all. Another change will be that the alternator will only charge the battery when under braking, this does interest me, as any load on the alternator robs HP

Hmm...I wonder how much fuel that will save. It doesn't sound all that bad, actually. Of course I'm all about MPGs and not HP.

Gas mileage often varies until 10k miles or so, and then it settles down into a regular X mpg. At this point with the Clubman only being out for 3 weeks, I doubt anyone has gotten to that point yet...

1st Fill Up

I made it 367 Miles on dealer gas and spent $50 to fill up with 13 Gals. for 28.23 MPG on the first tank. I have a ton of hills I have to drive, the last three miles of winding road with 800ft vertical climb to the house is the most fun. Can't wait till I finish break in so I can hit sport and lean into it getting up and down from the house. By the way it is better than the 16MPG the I averaged with the Hummer.

I'm in the 29mpg range too. Highway/traffic mostly, as I drive the 405 here is so cal daily. I can't wait to see what she's do when I finally hit the open road. I passed the break-in thousand on tuesday, and have been speeding up on-ramps ever since.

I'm not driving an "S" but one of those reasons is because, like Tim, I like good mpg. About 60% highway and 40% the rest, I'm getting about 41.4 mpg right now.

It works like this: when you come to a complete stop it will shut down the engine if you put it in neutral and you're not touching the clutch pedal.

Everything keeps working (radio, heating,..) and if you want to get up and go just press in the clutch and it will start again. It cuts in too early for my taste.

In city driving the starter engine is doing overtime, constantly switching on the engine (not very good for the turbocharger as well).

Thank god you can switch it off (like in stop and go traffic).

Wow, 41mpg. Guess I need to re-examine my need for hp over mpg...

no you don't you're already ahead of the game IMO. 29MPG in an S is a lot better than most of the other cars let alone in our class.

Don't worry yourself about it. Stop/start works fine and makes a significant contribution to economy and reduced emissions. It becomes standard on US-destined cars from the 09 builds, I think (?), but we've had it in the UK from the end of last year.

Well, it's great to hear from a non S owner. I wonder if there are any Cooper Clubman Automatic drivers out there yet, and whether one needs to assume that the automatic's mpg will improve over break in period, as well?

I have an S Clubman and I just finished my first tank (compliments of the dealer). Went 431 miles and averaged 33.8 MPG in mixed driving. I had a pontiac Solstice before and it had the same size tank and would normally go 300 miles on a tank.

I'm kind of disappointed to hear the S is only getting in the low 30's. My Clubman S is still on order, but I was expecting 35-40 out of it. My wifes Audi TT (225hp) will get up to 35 on the highway if you shift it before the turbo starts building pressure.

Big Jim: The EPA rating for the Clubman S Manual is 26 city / 34 highway, Clubman S Automatic is 23 city / 32 highway.
Why would a low 30's average disappoint you? It's right on the mark based upon the new, more realistic EPA mileage estimates. While long highway trips at a reasonable speed may return averages above 35 mpg, I think it's optimistic to expect 35-40 mpg in mixed driving. But, as the EPA sticker says, "your mileage may vary".

I've had my Clubman S Auto for over a month. All in town driving and Otto is getting 28 mpg with 500 miles driven so far. So muchbetter than the Titan's 11 mpg. And driving it doesn't hurt my neck and shoulders like the truck. Best car ever! I thought my BMW was the best until I drove the MINI. I'll never go back to other cars, except for hauling trash and going to shopping centers. No carts are going to hurt this car.

You went from a Titan to a Clubman? Now, that's a change!

I'll say. Do you think the Clubman would fit in the bed of the Titan?

The Titan is my husband's truck. He has muscular dystrophy and can no longer drive so I was using it to keep it from just sittting there. Plus no one bothers it in parking lots. I hate it, but it is good to bring things home from my shop.
We also have a Suburban, but it's for his wheelchair lift and the only car I can use to take him places.'
My other car is a BMW 330 convertible. I'm selling that to buy a MINI Cabrio next year. After driving the Clubman it was a no brainer. I only took my convertible out on nice days, no passengers, no smoking, perfume, water, trash, food, etc. Only have 5,725 miles on it and it's a 2002. Still smells new. It had 3 oil changes at BMW N. Scottsdale and a new battery. Great car, but I would like to have two MINIs in the garage instead.
I won't take the nice cars to parking lots as people are lousy to them. Someone spit on the BMW one of the 3 times she was left parked while I ran in to a pet shop for dog treats. Disgusting. It isn't like anyone gave me the car....
