R55 Clubman Mileage
I guess I am the only one with low gas mileage? I've filled the tank twice now, and both times the average is 23.6 mpg. It's mostly city (I drive about 6 miles every other day). Dark silver Clubbie S, manual, 16" wheels, not using AC often, not driving too recklessly (I thought... ;-) )
The biggest factors affecting your mileage on a manual transmission are going to be
-how fast you drive
-how gently you drive
-how many red lights you sit at/how often you take off from a stop
A/C and the type of wheels don't really affect mileage, though the tread and pressure of your tires might affect it a bit.
You're car is going to get the best mileage in sixth gear between 45-55 MPH on a nice level surface. If you want to see what your car is really capable of for mileage, plan on taking a 500 mile trip and set the cruise at 65. Avoid traffic jams. On an S, you should probably get mid to upper 30s. On a regular, you can get at least 44 MPG.

Granny speed dosn't help very much and also not as fun.
Gas has been lower cost now so eagerly waiting for some lower cost fuel.
How many are getting better than 30mpg avg.?
Before reading this I thought my little Red Waggon had a drinking problem

I think that average speed is a necessary parameter for judging mileage. It's better than estimates of, say, 60% highway and 40% City, etc...
I've just finished my first tank on a Clubman S. Hand calculated mileage was 25.6, OBC average speed was 26.2.
Had you asked I would have said 50-50 Highway vs. City but from the average speed it's obviously more City driving.

If you figure my city/highway percent by the number of mile i do of each in my daily commute it would be about 87.5% highway 12.5% city but my city commute for the time of day i travel is at 35 MPH and my Highway is 60 MPH. So to average that out my Average Speed should be about 53 MPH but the average speed on the ODBC ranges form 35 to 48 for each tank, way under what i think it should read. And i only have one stop light on my commute either direction.
Also my average for each tank (hand Calculated for last 5 tanks) is from 33.0 to 33.5 MPG.
But for those tanks that i do all higway driving I get 39-40 MPG and for the two tanks where i drove only in the city of Boston (downtown, central artery, back bay, all one block stop and go), I averaged 31 MPG.
As Tim has stated i also think it all comes down to how easy you drive your car.
I could have probalby gotten better mileage in Boston if i had wanted to, but i felt like keeping up with the traffic. And i coudl definately get better on my normal work commute if i kept my foot off the pedal on the two up hill on ramps but agiain i feel i should be at traffic speed to merge onto the highway.

On our first tank after we picked up our Clubbie S in LV and drove to LA, with 75% of Freeway, we had 36.8MPG, I was impressed. The average speed between LA and LV was about 11MPH above the speed limit. With that we were babying the car to keep the RPMs below 4k for the breakin period.
i have an automatic 09 non-S clubman. i have 240 miles on dealer gas so far and gas gauge looks just below half... !
Just got our 08 Clubman S yesterday & the OBC is showing 35 mpg. It was a demo so it had a few thousand miles on it already. I can't complain about that kind of mileage. My 05 Cabrio MC was only getting about 28 combo mpg.

Your mini looks awesome, BTW!!!
I can't speak for Brian, but I'll share my impression of an auto JustaClubman. I can pull into fast traffic and I can climb a hill just fine - but I won't be pulling into fast traffic ON a hill.
It's the smoothest automatic I have ever experienced. Silky. I like it a lot. I'd love more power; the cops in my town would love for me to have more power too - for revenue generation. My decision came down to not being willing to trade away MPG on BOTH the 'S' version AND the auto. My wife doesn't drive a stick and has no plans to learn (and for daily commute I prefer an auto anyway) - so a Justa it is.
Note that I didn't get the MINI for the MPG in the first place - it's just that once that factored into the equation, I needed to give it some weight. The thing corners likes it's on rails. I love the whole package. No regrets.

Not sure if this is totally true but I've been told that your shift point also, in the long run, has a significant effect. A driver constantly hitting 5-6000 rpm before hitting the clutch will burn up more gas than one hitting 3-4000 rpm. I had a Dodge Intrepid with Autostick and I always shifted at 3,000 rpm. I averaged 25-27 mpg with it. Can't say the same for the Clubman as I haven't had a chance to drive it yet!

I have a similar story to tell as dkamp. My mileage is similar. I got the auto for the same reason. I also agree with Barley.
I find my justa auto to have plenty of go. From a dead stop, I'll get a little hesitation now and then. The car does not disappoint me; it is significantly better performance than anything else that gets 30+ mpg. The paddle shifters give me the boost to pass that I'd get from a manual.
Bryan -- the gas gauge is top heavy. You'll burn through the second half of the hash marks much faster than the first half. The culprit is the first hash mark -- I get about a 100-120 miles from it. I don't think it's odd, either. We have all seen that the tank holds far more volume than the owners' manual figure of 13.1 gallons. You have to burn through that extra gallon+ to get down to 13.1 before the gas gauge knows you're driving.

I have filled 2 1/2 times so far and am averaging 32 mpg. Not bad, but not what I expected for a manual JustaCooper Clubman. Not that I'm complaining! Way too much fun to drive to baby it! And I just passed the break-in mileage... so... I'll probably get worse mileage now!
