R55 Clubman Mileage
A six year old BMW convertible with less than 6k miles? ... and an Arizona car! I'd say you have one very rare, very desirable BMW. I had an '02 BMW wagon, and never had a single issue with anyone abusing my car. (parked anywhere and everywhere, including NYC, train stations, etc...) Maybe because it was a wagon people just didn't know what it was, or maybe they just felt sorry for me... Anyway, sorry about all the Yahoos out there, good luck selling the BMW, and good luck with your MINI!
YOu know with all the things that happen in all of our lives, I find it wonderful to have something we love so much it diminishes the bad things. I had a brain tumor for 21 years before any doctors listened to me, I've had asthma since 3 mos old and got diabetes from the stress of my shop. I don't get negative about it as I am so lucky to have my dogs, my mom and sister and my cars. Rich is pretty ill, but despite only being able to sit and read or watch tv, he has a wonderful sense of humor and somehow gets himself up every single day. He loves the MINI yet will never get to ride in it or even see it as it is in the garage in back.
Materal things mean very little compared to health, but the MINI makes me smile every single day and I know it does for all of you, too.
My dad put off having any fun until his boat business was a success, but by that time at age 49 he got Alzheimers and never enjoyed all he worked for.
My advice to everyone is to live each day like it's your last and take things with a light heart. So much unhappiness out there.
Love your MINIs. They are the best, the very best.

I have an S Clubman with about 1000 miles on it and do about 70% highway and 30% city. The computer in the car is telling me I'm getting 32.8 mpg. I'm sure when I start putting my foot into it that will go down a but. I have noticed keeping the car at higher RPM (over 2500) seems to increase the mpg buy about 1 mpg. Time will tell if this holds up.
Just figured out how to check today...driving new clubbie about a week now, 400+ miles, mix of highway and city but mainly highway: 27.6 mpg
it's an automatic S
and yes...driving is fun again! I actually get excited getting up in the morning to drive to work and that means a LOT

I'd be curious to hear from some former R53 owners who've moved on to a Clubman S - have you noticed a significant uptick in mileage?
My R53's mileage would be fantastic - for a mid-size SUV. I'm not sure if its the hills and traffic here in Austin, drag from the driving lights, the weight of the sunroof/automatic, my leaden right foot, or a combination thereof, but I rarely get better than 20 mpg in daily driving.
So when I read claims of 28 mpg...I'm dubious.

Doogs, do you ever leave 2nd gear? Did you have your engine bored out to one huge cylinder? That is really not the norm for other Minis. I would speed around in my '05 MC and still get around 35 mpg. Driving on the freeway and a little city driving, I'm getting 41/42 mpg on my Clubman. 20 mpg?
I'm on tank 5 in it and I'm getting 28 and 29mpg per tank. Didn't mattter whether it was Mid grade or Premium. If I drive like Granny I can get 29 never touching the sport button. Sport button on and really enjoying the Mini the way it's supposed to I got 28. LOL
Guess I'll be seeing allot of tanks in the 28mpg range

And its not just me, either. My parents drove it down to San Antonio and back for some service last week while the wife and I were at home with the newborn, and they only managed 24 mpg.
I'd really like the Clubman to put in a better showing.
Very Confused ?
Just filled up for the first time, ran out the free tank from dealer. 375 miles all in town stop and go, car had only 2 miles on odometer when I took delivery. The car held 14.533 gallons? My owners manuel say 13.2 gallon capacity. The car's computer was showing 2 miles remaining before out of gas. So the dilemma is, how did I get 14.533 gallons in a tank which holds 13.2 gallons or is the gas station pumps not calibrated correctly? Is the 13.2 gallons imperial or US gallons? Even with that 25.8 miles per gallon all in town is 10 miles per gallon better than what I was getting in my BMW 6 series. I plan on running out this tank and if I put another 14.5 gallons in, will confront the gas station with a complaint...

Right, but if I read you sig correctly yours is a Cooper with a manual tranny, right? It is interesting to hear from the Cooper side of the Clubman discussion.
I easily get 40/41 (OBC) in city driving in my coupe (right now I'm at 42.5 city) and I suspect similar results can be had in a Clubman. Coopers (Clubman or Coupe) somehow manage to far exceed new or old EPA estimates...it's really a pretty remarkable little car.

Believe it or not, I have managed to get 26MPG on my daily driver '05 R53 S with 40K miles. I am getting around 325 miles per tank. I usually drive the speed limit (Too many police speed traps popping up here lately) but even on "spirited" runs the car is getting very good mileage. By the way the car is 100% stock, 6-speed manual, no sunroof and 16" V-spokes.
The Clubman S is currently delivering 28-29MPG in the city. Yes the Turbocharged engine does afford better fuel mileage than the Supercharged TRITEC. The Clubman replaced my wife's first MINI, a 2002 Cooper R50 CVT with 115HP. The Clubman S with 172HP and a turbocharger, is delivering same or better fuel economy than her old Cooper CVT. It is amazing!
We currently have 850 miles in the Clubman and the car is 5 weeks old. Yes we need to drive more, I know!

Isuzu Trooper. Like the truck - but the mileage was not so hot and I drive 63 miles a day round trip to/from work. So I started looking for something economical and fun - they were releasing the Clubman just in time for me.
So this is weird...
I'm working half days this week to help the wife take care of our newborn, and on the way home yesterday I decided to drive like a granny to see if I could improve my dismal mileage. In light traffic, on 90% highway driving, I managed 26 mpg in my R53. Far better than the usual 20 mpg.
This morning I did the same thing bringing the yellow lab home from the vet's office. Only difference was that I had just filled up at a Shell station vs. my usual Exxon. Same road, same conditions, and I even had the ding of a 75lb dog in the back. The result? 31 mpg.

Just filled the tank for the second time in our Clubman S with automatic. The range showed 24 miles and the tank took 13.5 gallons. Thus my experience was similar to WHM who found that it took about 14.5 gallons to fill up an almost empty tank.
Actual calculated mileage was 20.6.
Car computer calculated mileage was 22.1.
Car computed average speed was 21.4.
Driving was done mostly on San Francisco streets - many hills, many stop and goes. Driving is still in conservative break-in mode.
This gas mileage is about 15% better than our previous 06 Cooper S with automatic.
I expect the highway performance to be better than a 15% improvement based on some brief observations on some highway driving.

Wow. I'll have to say that those with the Clubman S & manuals seem to be (on average) a bit off from the MCS. I will be ordering a Clubby later this year and have been wrestling btw the Clubman or Clubman S. As folks get their cars broken in, I'd like to hear more on this subject. For the 07 & newer MCS's it seems to be at least in the low 30's. I can get 34-38 hwy in mine.
If the mileage for the Clubman S is truly in the high 20's low low 30's I think this could be a deciding factor for me. Keep the data coming, including some calculations off tank fillups.
BTW - for each 10mph over 60 your mileage can drop by as much as 10%. There was an article on this the other day on Yahoo Finance. I really notice a big 4-5mpg drop off (from 36-37mpg to 32-33) if I take it to 80mph cruising instead of 70mph. I think it is a combination of increase speed, headwind, & trailing suction pocket as well as a bit of a spool up from the turbo at this rpm range.

Our first trip form Michigan to South Carolina and back in our Clubman "S" auto got 30.9 mpg overall (1359.6 miles) measured not from the computer. It had 2 people and a load of bags. We went thru the Dragon and spent most of one day in the mountains.
We had the cruse control set to 79 on the highway sections. We had a best leg of 33.4 mpg with the cruse set to 72.
My 03 "S" got 34.6 mpg on a best leg of the trip to the Dragon a couple of years ago with a similar load.
