Loud motor noise closing top???

My 2-week old MCSca was in the garage all weekend with the top down. This morning, I drove to work in very cool temps (32F-35F, wind deflector, heated seats, and a hat) and put the top up upon arrival. As the top was going up, there was an awful screeching noise. It seemed to be coming from the passenger side. I am unsure if the noise was coming from the motor, or the mechanicals in the top. Has anyone else heard this?

I dunno exactly what you mean by "awful screeching noise" but my top is pretty squeaky/screechy every time I raise it

Unfortunately this is normal. Mine has done it all along and changes with how long the top has been left down, temperature and humidity. I think it has something to do with the rubber seals in the tracks. I don't think it is anything mechanical. I believe some people have had some lubrication done to help alleviate the issue. Call your service department to see if they have a solution.

My dealer told me to keep the top up unless you are driving around. He said that keeping the top down will cause discolored creases in the top over time.

I only lower it to drive during the day...I have not heard any noise!

I've heard the noise on many occasions. Again, Unfortunately, that's a noise you have to deal with. I've had mine to the dealer to "lube" the top, but about 4 days later it did the same thing.

No more screeching...

Well, I just got back from lunch, and putting the top down and back up resulted in no such screeching...just the usual motor whine and a few squeeks. It must have had something to do with the top being down for 3 days and/or the really cold temps this morning.

If I leave mine down in the garage at home overnight, it'll squeak and creak coming back up. Typical...

Ok, we have something similar. It's not a noise from the top closing, but rather once the car starts.. .It's coming from the passanger side. I can't think of what it sounds like, but it's somesort of motor from the passanger side. Possibly the A/C unit? Anyone else have something similar? Sorry to hijack the thread a bit...

That happens to be my thread too, so I don't want anyone to be confused...these are not the same noises. The noise that I heard from my top on that chili morning has not happened again. I have since been very religious about not leaving the top down over night nor for any prolonged period that I am not motoring down the road. Although this results in more wear and tear on the electric motor, it should keep the top looking better longer and keep my interior protected from UV while I'm at work, in the store, whatever.

oops, sorry, I didn't see that. I think I've heard the sound as well (from the dash area), but the way cars are made now, I just figured it was something with airbags, etc. so I just write it off as normal.

Oh, I'm not saying that there is anything wrong...I just want to know what the heck it is...in the other thread, that is. This noise with my top on the other hand was horrible. Thankfully it hasn't happened a second time.

owners manual says never keep the car with the top down for extended periods of time... also its not good to put the top down if it has any morning moisture or dew on it.. my wife used to just put the top down on her ride every morning and leave it down all day on her old vw... she went through 3 tops... I think she finally learned her lesson and wont be doing it on the mini
