Convertible top will not retract.

I've got a Bright Orange 2006 MCS convertible with 15,500 miles and love it. The only problem until now was a leaking gasket on the coolant thermostat at about 14,000 miles. Today the top will not open all the way. It goes back to the first stop O.K., but will not retract totally. The red indicator light flashes. Any ideas???

First, check to see if the rear window shelf is in the "lower" position, which when lowered will press down on a sensor on the driver's side in the boot (you can see it when lifting up the rear of the shelf). If this button isn't pushed down, the top will not open.

Yep... classic symptom of the shelf having gotten "bumped" up a bit off the switch, or one of the latches inside the boot being ajar a bit.

I went out this morning and checked for that switch and sure enough the back shelf had not been seated correctly. And then I went through the Owners Manual and found this information "buried" on the bottom of one of the pages. You have saved me a two and a half hour trip to Charleston to visit my new MC mechanic. So glad I found this MC Web Site.
I'll look for BLIMEY in NC. I spend a good bit of the summer in the Franklin, Cashiers, Highlands area. Thanks again.

the "shelf" is the covering in the boot (trunk) that is just above the upper trunk opening. reach in and pull it down until it stops. if this is not your problem then check the two levers on each side inside the trunk. they have to be pushed toward the outside---the left one to the left and the right one to the right.if either the shelf or levers are not seated all the way only the sun roof will work.

Thank you! Thank you! I've owned my 2006 for a year and never realized what those latches were. Spent the last 24 hours thinking my convertible top had given up the ghost until I was able to find this piece of info. You guys are great!

Thermostat housing problems are rampant. I've had three replaced, the last one just recently with the better clear gasket. It is a newer improved one over the old and should last a lot longer.

Any fixes?

I seem to have the same problem almost every time I try to put the top down. I would say 9 times out of ten, when attempting to put the top down, I get the button that flashes red. I have to get out of my car, go into the boot, and make sure that the latches are secure.

Any tips on how to prevent the latches and the shelf from moving out of place? Is there any way to lock them in? Or do you think this is something I should bring up when I get it serviced (to see if they can do something to fix it)?

It is very annoying to deal with and I find myself never driving with my top down because I have to get out and re-adjust each time.
