Mounting Garmin 760 in Mini S Conv

Hi - I'm considering getting a Garmin Nuvi 760. I've read about the Kuda mount but I'm not up for messing around with taking my dash off and it looks like that install requires that.

Has anyone used the proclip install? It looks like that is easier but it looks like I'd have to remove the cup holder (I know a lot of people don't like the cup holder but I use it a lot).

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
KC

I did a mickey mouse custom mount to the front of the awful but useful cupholder for my 360 garmin. It works pretty well - easy to reach and see, but not too attractive when when the garmin is in the glove box. Let me know if you want me to describe and photo the "installation" (if you promise not to laugh).

I'd love to see it! I was considering some sort of velcro solution so I definately won't laugh at any functional suggestions

I use the proclip #853580. It attaches under the cup holder and is still visible and reachable.

I use the suction cup mount attached to the 100 mph area of the speedo. It works great and if you were going that fast you don't need to be looking at the navigation screen!

If you've got a convertible, that's a first-gen car, so you don't have to remove the dash to install the Kuda mount. We have them in both of our convertibles and have been very happy with them. The only minor complaint I have is that the black leather covering the mount is slightly darker than the dash, but that's not a big deal.

To install the dash-mounted version of the Kuda, you slip one tab of the mount under the front lip of the dash panel, and the other tab under the oval-shaped defroster vent on top of the dash. Press very firmly, and it snaps into place - no adhesive, no screws.

+1 that's where our Nuvi sits

Maybe our roads are worse than yours, Scott, but my Kuda mount kept falling off every couple hundred miles. I finally had to take a small metal screw and drive it through the defroster vent and into the tab of the Kuda mount to hold it into place.

Wow - that's surprising. Even lowered on stiff coilovers and driving on crappy roads, I don't think I could get the Kuda mount to fall off if my life depended on it. In fact, I had to press so hard to get the two stepped tabs to engage at the same time that I thought I might be on the verge of breaking something. But once everything snapped into place, it's not going *anywhere*.

The install on my wife's cabrio went exactly the same way. Frankly, I don't know how I'd get the Kuda mount off if I ever needed to.

I've got a new mount that is getting manufactured. It will sell for around the same as a Pro Clip but be superior in every way because it includes a micro ball mount that's adjustable for pivot (not just a metal bracket) as well as adjustable from the Garmin standard clip mount, and it's made out of steel.

It requires no tools to install or remove. Fits on any 1st gen MINI. It puts the Nuvi below the window line so it's less visible from passerbys. It can be adjusted for height and can be used on either side of the down tube. The Nuvi won't block the HU CDs, and lets you keep the Nuvi antennae in it's optimal horizontal position. I've tested it with the 350, 360, and 660.

It's rock steady, doesn't swivel during aggressive driving, and the mount has enough adjustments to counter any glare that the screen picks up.

Here's the unpainted prototype showing a large McDonalds Ice Coffee drink doesn't interfere with the Nuvi--although I dumped the stock '05 cup holder for the MINI Fini cup holder which is superior IMO.

Can be mounted low like this

This is where I currently have it mounted and like it best.

Even a Del Taco Large Drink fits without problems, lol

Hi Octane Guy - When will your mount be ready for purchase? I bought my Nuvi 760 yesterday so I'm excited to get started. I think I'll use the suction cup mount on the speedo for now.

Here's what I did for my 350 - same approach would work for the newer widescreen models.

I saw your solution after I did mine--funny we had the same goals in our approach. The main difference about my approach is that it's reversible to either side of the down tube and doesn't need tools to install or remove and has a bit more adjustability--to point towards driver or passenger--say the passenger wanted to control the nav. And those ProClips are kinda expensive for an angle bracket with holes. =) But it looks really good!

Octane Guy, did that Garmin mount for 1st Gen ever go into production? Looking for a solution for my 2008 cabrio.

Here's a couple pix of what I did for my '06 cab. The basic mount is from Craven and screws behind the stock tach. I replaced the Craven arms with some thicker aluminum ones of my own design to make them stiffer and reduce vibration. (Haven't gotten around to having them black anodized yet.) But the stock craven stuff works. They supply the ball, as I recall, and the Garmin mount simply pops onto it. I positioned them so that the screen is just above the steering wheel and just below the road beyond the front of the car. Same with the iPod mount. This puts them as close to my field of vision while I'm driving to minimize how much I have to look away from the road. I think mounting them down low and off to one side is nutz.
