R50/53 Range = 0 + how many miles?
Range = 0 + how many miles?
I was just curious because I chickened out when the range got to 6 miles on my very first tank of gas.
I got 360 miles on my first tank with an average speed of 23.8 MPH.
It took 13.546 gallons to fill it. What is the capacity?

I think the tank is officially supposed to hold 13.5 gallons. I have a feeling that 0=0 as far as the range though! I'm also not brave enough to really find out. I read in the manual that if you run the car to the last drop, you can damage it, so I'm content without finding out for myself.
With the amount of gas it took I have to agree, I cut it close and may have had less than the reported 6 miles. When I started out this morning I had 18 miles left and in about 1 mile it dropped to 6 miles.
I have an S...I could have sworn my manual said my tank had a 14.5 gallon capacity but I coulda dreamed it
Also my manual says to not let the counter drop below 35 before filling up. Dunno if that would be harmful or not but I figure why risk it?

I have an MCS and have had the range go to zero. I have driven several times on zero then flatliner
(no number showing). I go between 10-12 miles after I see zero; about 3 miles after flatliner. I have done this on a few occassions. My friends start to panic when they see zero. I laugh and wait till it goes flatline..
then look at their faces
. I have 22000 miles on my MCS and no problems with fuel lines. Be brave and try going for a flatliner.

From the time I was old enough to understand, my dad always told me to fill up when the gas gauge reaches 1/4 tank. Partially, this was for safety...you never know what is going to happen that will require you to run your car for a long period of time or keep you from filling up when you expect to...traffic backup, incliment weather etc. (My wife and I were once stuck on I-75 for about 12 hours, and a guy I worked with ended up spending the night on I-40 in a mountain pass because of snow.) I believe the second reason was, as mentioned before, that some gunk does accumulate at the bottom of your tank. Now, my dad never got less than 250,000 miles out of a car, so I tend to always follow his advice. Note: He also always used premium gas and manually altered his timing to take advantage of it.
I just looked in my manual & it says:
Fuel tank volume
Approx. 13.2 gallons / 50 liters, of which

capacity.
Do not drive until the fuel tank is
totally empty. Otherwise engine
operations are not guaranteed and damage
could occur.

On a recent trip to I was determined to reach the 400 club.
The 'countdown' plus the odo was hovering around 410 from about 1/2 tank - initially the range was a rather optomistic 438 miles.
At the 350 travelled, the range was 44 miles
At the 380 travelled the range was 11 miles
At 393 I pulled into a gas station with the range on 2 miles.
At that time the GPS was telling me that the next nearest gas station was 17 miles, so I was not prepared to risk it aqnd my wife was wondering why the speed had dropped so much
