The only like response (waving like a crazy woman) was from a lady driving the same color Mini as I - and we were both in the same parking lot, going opposite directions. It was totally cool. Other than that, I haven't had a response yet from any that I've waved at.

I agree that it must be the difference between 'owner' and 'driver'.

When you're BOTH, you gotta wave.
