Problem with 06 MCS sunroof

Took delivery of a 06 MCS two weeks ago and have had issues with the sunroof.

After the first day I parked the car and returned to it in the morning.

Sunroof refused to open.

I could hear the control unit click a few times....but no movement.

Thanks to a friend who looked up the Bentley manual, turns out you can "re-initialize" the sunroof by turning the key to start and pushing the sunroof buttong UP for 15 seconds.

I did so, heard it click after 15 seconds and restarted the car.

Worked like a charm.

I'm a bit concerned, however, since it has since happened at least two more times.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any thoughts on the cause?

Thanks.

All I can think of it....nothing. If your dealer isnt far away, take it there. If it is a haul to get there, just do it at your next oil change.

BTW, Congrats on your new MINI!

Hmmm, sounds like an unusual problem. At least you know how to make it work if it goes on the fritz during a rain storm or other need for closing it. If your dealer isn't too far away, I'd take it in ASAP. Otherwise at least call them and make them aware of it. I've had my MCS since March and open the sunroof almost everytime I drive it and have never had a problem with it not working. Good luck!

I would not wait a whole year or 10,000k miles to bring this to the dealer... if its only 2 weeks old, do it asap.!

After thinking about it and seeing this comment from Nick T., I gots to thinking......

After you reconnect the battery you’ll have to re-initialize the windows (and sunroof if you have it).

To initialize the windows raise the window and hold the window switch in the raised position for 5 or 6 seconds.

To initialize the sunroof close the sunroof with the switch. Then hold the switch in the tilt (raised - not open) position for about 15 seconds. When the roof moves from tilt to closed initialization is completed.
I had to initialize the sucker just to get it to operate.....

His comments say that "when the roof moves from tilt to closed initialization is completed". My problem is that it doesn't move in the first place.....So maybe I think I'm initializing when I'm really not....

So I will go home tonight......Make sure the roof works.....And then initialize it properly from a closed position. I expect the roof to go to the tilt position (since I'll be holding the pushing the button UP) and then I'll expect it to close!

Let's see if that works.

the worst that could happen is you get stuck in open position while out and about. :( or if it rains

Good to know, but do you mean turn the key to START or to ON?

Also, no problems yet with our 06 sunroof. . . .

Ok so when I got home last night I went and tested the sunroof - worked fine.

Closed it all the way, left the key in ON, and held the button UP for 15 seconds.

Sunroof went to tilt, and then came back down.

Let's see if that did the trick!

Well I thought it worked but last night I parked around 11:00pm......Woke up this morning and got to the car at 8:00am to go get the inspection done and the sunroof wouldn't open.

Reset it TWICE this time.....

Let's see if that works....

Car sat for the entire week without being driven...

And today the sunroof failed to open again.

Any thoughts?

Sunroof Motor Repair

I had the same problem with my sunroof going DOA. It turns out that the sunroof motor was shot, because of a faulty diode. I had taken my complete inner roof apart to get access to the motor. Once there I could have easily replaced that motor with a new one. But instead I figured I had nothing to lose if I was able to take the motor apart and try to fix it myself. Turns out I removed the diode which was causing my motor to malfunction and it now works perfectly with no issues.

I wrote a blog on this adventure, including step by step photos on how to DIY sunroof repair. Take a look: http://zippeeshade.com/archives/540
