If you buy a manual, the advertized fuel economy is 25 mpg (city) and 32 (highway) for the "S". If you drive aggressively (and use a/c a lot etc.) you will struggle to get these figures. Around town, I doubt the "S" is going to be much better than your current ride.

Mine is a 2006 MCS Cabrio - but with JCW - and my "city driving" (which consists of suburban tooling around with only very occasional driving on limited access roads) is pulling down 22 or 23 routinely, based on the on-board computer at each tank filling. I was told on purchase that the JCW steals an additional 1 or 2 miles per gallon.
On the highway I have broken 30 as an average on long trips - but you gotta be disciplined and not cruise at 90, which Maggie seems to want to do whenever she has the chance..... I have no discipline when your car is this fun.
What I have NOT done yet - but will do this summer - is to take a really long highway trip with the top down the whole way. I will get my shot in June and will report the results.

Remember as miles rack up on an engine so does the mileage. Also driving style can affect milage up to 25%, then acessories (like A/C), tire pressure, weight and so on. MPG shouldn't be your only reason to witch cars, if it is get a Deisel powered car and convert to bio-deisel, 450+ miles on a tank with ease, and half of your fillups are at McDonalds or Burger King.
