At least twice a week, I bump my windshield wipers on as I turn on/off the ignition. That can't be good for the windshield glass or my wiper blades. I really wish the wipers were activated by the lever moving downward instead.

I agree...this is a total design flaw. It's so easy to bump that lever when you are reaching to turn off the car and take out the key. Obviously, the people who designed the car, didn't drive it very often, either that or they couldn't come up with an better design.

Are you sure the wiper stalk is at fault, or is it you being a little bit ham-fisted? To put it in perspective, wiper stalks are pretty much in the exact same place on any other car (ignore stupid GM for now), why would the MINI's stalk be any different? My 3-series stalk operates in idential fashion, and I have not once had this sort of issue. I might be the odd one out here, if so, then

I do the same thing daily! When I start the car in the garage - dup - The thinks smear bugs all over. When I try to flash the lights I get a windshield wash.

Yeah I think is more of a European car maker taste. It seem that most eurpean car have their wiper operated by pushing up instead of down (which is what the rest of the auto maker do (japanese and american car)).

Just so you know - you are not alone. Here is an older thread about the same issue.

I, on the other hand, have never had this problem... ??

I don't think I've ever done this... but then again being in oregon I might not notice. I have however flashed my brights more than once when using the turn signal.
