'05 MCS died tonight.

Tonight I was driving along the highway when all-of-a-sudden, my engine shut-off. I kid you not, the engine shut itself off while I was going 70 mph. I carefully pulled-off to the shoulder, stopped, tried to restart the engine, and nothing. Nothing. My brand-new MCS was dead. It wasn't the battery because everything else was still working...windows, Nav, stereo, sunroof, everything. However, the engine would not start...it wouldn't even crank. My car has 2,714 miles on it. And it's dead. WTF? To make matters worse, I had to wait two hours on the side of the road for Mini roadside assistance to show up. The car has been towed to Baron Mini here in Kansas City, and I have to wait until tomorrow to find out what's wrong with it. Can anybody, ANYBODY relate to this situation? If so, I would like to know what might be the cause of this.

Thanks.

Sorry to read this, HyperBlue. It sounds like an electronic glitch. Hope it's a quick and easy fix. Let us know.

If it just stopped running, and then would not crank, my first thought is something is wrong with the ignition imobilizer.
Whatever it is I hope it gets fixed soon.

But would the ignition imobilizer take in effect though while the motor is running? Plus I thought what the immobilizer immobilizes are the fuel injectors? If that is the case, the motor should still crank...

Hope you get your car back soon.. I hoep it's nothing serious like the motor itself...

I'm not sure if it would stop running, plus I'm not really sure what gets immobilized
So if someone does try and steal a MINI, and they bust the ignition lock, can they crank it, till the battery goes flat, or the starter craps out
Anybody know?

This once happended to me in a test drive 3 years ago when the MCS first came out. I was driving doing about 50 MPH and started to push the gas a little and all of a sudden the car just shut off. When we got back to the dealership, the mechanic said it was a faulty O2 sensor and said he had seen this problem before. Dont know if this helps but hope it does.

No problems here at 2,300 miles, but I am interested in finding out what caused your engine shutdown.

Do you have any aftermarket mods in your car?

I swear this is like the 4th or 5th thing I've read where an 05 MCS shut off all of a sudden or went into limp mode while driving. Along with the wrong belt they putting on the engines, this is giving the MINIs a bad rep.

my 05 MCSC went into limp home mode on me a few months ago. I had just began to accelerate onto the highway and the car dropped to like 20 mph. It was an electronic throttle sensor. Your problem is hopefully something electronic.

I will bet it’s going to be part of the electrical system. You gave no indication of thumps, bumps or nasty noise from the engine, just that it cut off.

We’re all waiting to see what happened.

So, it's either an O2 sensor or a throttle sensor? I guess I'll find out. I'm on my way up to Baron Mini right now. They wouldn't tell me anything over the phone, so I'm a little bit nervous at the moment. I'll update everyone later this evening.

This car was for sale a couple weeks ago. I think I was just missing my RSX. However, that's no longer the case for a couple reasons: one, I don't miss the Acura anymore...and two, I couldn't consciously try to sell a car to someone after it has shut-off on me while driving on the highway. As any of my friends would say, I'm a terrible liar. And yes, I know that when you sell a car privately, the purchaser is buying the car "as-is", but I would still feel guilty if they called me the next week and said, "that damn car you sold me died on the highway out in western Kansas and my little girl and I were stranded for three hours!" (fyi-western Kansas is truly the middle of nowhere)

Has anyone had issues with the early 05's or is cars built after a certain date? It would be nice for those who've had issues just post production dates.

Lets hope its something minor

Good Luck

Hey, Hyper Blue. Sorry to hear about this. Makes me a little nervous, as I don't usually drive around with a cell phone, so I wouldn't even be able to call MINI Roadside assistance.

Hang in there! I can't imagine that it'd be anything too complex . . .

Did you look into the bold that mount the ground to the chasis (on the left when you're facing the machine from the front)? Once happened to me, after I drove to a shopping center, then it did not start, but with electical ok. First, thought it was due to Randy Webbs pulley installation just done one day ago, but after Randy went thru with me, it was that ground wire came loose and the engine will not start. Once tightened, back to normal.
