I don't know.. if you look at posts from last summer there're quite a few comments about the lack of posts. I think that the community, overall, is busy and distracted and there're a lot of people left over stuck inside in the air conditioning getting angry and bitter. I know I've been in a bit of a funk lately with the whole job thing and people moaning here about silly things like what someone said or did just makes me pass over a lot of posts.

And for some, maybe the honeymoon is over. They're realizing the truth that not every car is perfect and many are FAR from it. I get tired of people calling the car names and threatening ridiculous things. When the same people show up on SO many posts complaining about the SAME thing with their car...eh. For me, the car is wonderful. I haven't had any major problems (just a door rattle that's been fixed). Maybe I'd feel differently if more had gone wrong, but I somehow doubt it. It's a quirky, unique, fun car.

I hope that the community spirit will survive in whatever place mco finds itself... The April Club MUST live on!

So chefie, you promised us stories! Gruesome and horrifying! Tell!

Well...OK... ) When the principal came by to compliment us on the food and smooth service he ORDERED me to leave for the hospital and helped the kids clean up. I had some very nasty blisters over the back of my hand, thumb and forearm...ouchie!!!

The thumb-slicer happened back when I was an apprentice, some 20+ years ago. We had an appetizer with a ring of VERY thin sliced bell peppers used to hold a pool of sauce in place omn the plate. The problem was that if you used the guard on the slicer as usual it crushed the peppers and made the slices uneven. It was also slow (and safe ). I discovered that if you held the pepper with your hand and moved it back and forth over the blade you could control the pressure and get perfect slices...YEAH! I also discovered that if you went too fast because you were in the weeds andf didn't pay attention to how far down you had sliced you could slice a nice round skin wafer off the end of your thumb!

I was so shocked I don't think I even thought to curse. I was working for an old school French chef at the time and he did remember to curse...a lot...(service started in about 10 minutes ) He used a little bit of
French medical treatment--2 shots of VSOP cognac, and we taped the tip back on with gauze and adhesive tape. Made it through service150= covers, and went to the clinic to get the piece stiched on properly so it could cover the area underneath while it healed. To this day my left thumb is slightly flatter than the right one but otherwise I'm A-OK.

Hope I didn't put y'all off food, really it IS safe to eat out!!! Those are the only two MAJOR injuries I've had in 20+ years of cheffing so I guess that's not too bad...

Rachel I agree with your assesment of the current state of MCO. It really doea seem to be a small minority who are constantly nit-picking and bringing up the same issues over and over. I too have had nothing but fun with my MINI and still love the reactions and interest Burnie draws. There are still a lot of very nice/fun folks on this board...I hope that they remain the majority...I really do enjoy this board. I'm especially glad that the April mob is still rolling, I think we lucked out and caught a very special group. I wish we would hear more from some of the others--wonder what they're all up to and how they're enjoying their rides?

Motor on!

chef

well hello everyone.. it's me, ryan.. remember me? well, anyway... looks like the **** hit the fan here on MCO with all the fuss over BMW and the site. i sure hate political-ish stuff.

at anyrate.. Winnie is at the dealership getting her 10k service, new windshield, auto-locks turned off, clear third brake light put in, and a couple annoyances checked out.

car's still great, but there's way too many chips and marks on the bonnet from crap on the highways and from other cars that just pisses me off.. i shoulda gotten one of those clear bra things, but i guess i would have if they weren't a million bucks or whatever they are.

going on a lil road trip down skyline drive from VA to NC, then going to the Biltmore Estate and surrounding areas for a week next week before school starts back up again. then wooooo, i get to work on my masters' thesis.. fun times ahead.. so long as i have my MINI to recluse in and get away from it all, i should be alright.

alright... time to go play some golf.. hope all is well with everyone... ryan... good luck with the new car process.. peace

Dang, chef... you get all the COOL accidents! All of my good ones only left yummy bruises and nothing interesting to show people. I've broken my foot with the horses (she didn't like THAT person, so she let ME know), messed up my back and hip and you ALL know about my knee.

Wags - 10k already?! Wow... I'm still working on it.

Got new tires in the mail, brake pads sent today, still waiting on brake fluid (gah! hurry UP!). Can't wait for the track event. The tech pre-inspection is being held at a winery in the Finger Lakes so we can have lots of fun sampling the wines. Mmm....

Why am I still working here?! *sigh*

OK. Now for some positive news.

Visiting my parents in New Paltz last night when the lights went out. Waited till 11:40 PM to head home, knowing the traffic was going to be lighter, and took a route to Long Island that skirted NYC.

So I figure that the police had better things to do than use radar or patrol the Thruway and Parkways....I set the cruise at 90 mph and motored back very efficiently (OBC said 28.6 MPG).

115 miles in 90 minutes. I did have to slow for the EZ Pass barriers, or I would have done better.

The power failure was terrible for all involved, but in this case, it was a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card for me.

The MINI is solid as a rock at high speed (have not gone over 115 though).

Do have this burning rubber smell at the back wheels after these runs, but all seems well. Hope all of you are too.

Press On Regardless,
Red

gee, it's been a weird weekend for odd comments about my car. Was walking out of the grocery store to find two guys with faces pressed to the windshield looking in. They asked boyfriend about it (ignored me, pretty much ). The older guy asked if we actually took it on the highway.

naaaah...

then the guy at the tire place refused to believe that the car handled as well as I said it did; he swore up and down that it HAD to be too top-heavy. Hooookaaaay....

At least they didn't ask you if your "mini" cooper was made by the same company that makes "mini" vans...yes I was really asked that question!!!!!

Chef, You start school already? I think my daughter has two more weeks to go.

I fixed the twin dents on my bonnet this morning. Went to a paintless dent repair shop. It was prety cool.

Before

After

I fixed the scratched bonnet stripe with a sharpie.

wow, cool stories Chefie! (if a bit gruesome )

My most annoying MINI-comment was when this old guy asked if it was the "new Chrysler" ummm..... NO!

Looks good Andy! GOD BLESS SHARPIES!!!

Yes we go back already...teachers have been back for a week--love those meetings--it's really important to get all the students back while its still over 100 degrees outside I guess...but if we waited for it to cool down it might be October before we started

Chef - you've got an AWESOME attitude about teaching! I wish I'd had you as a teacher!

People are just... weird. Mostly people don't even seem to notice my car around here, so it surprises me when someone DOES and then something stupid comes out. The Chrysler thing I can ALMOST see if someone sees the badge from a distance. They've both kinda sorta got wings I guess MAYBE. There's NO excuse for the Mini-brand van though.. that's a shin-kicking offense!

Glad the paintless fix worked Andy. Guess there were no structual bits in the way.

Nice to know the Chef is back teaching America how to cook!

And no one liked my blackout story. Tough crowd.

Off to MINI of Southampton to have a look at my glove box latch Wednesday AM.

Hope all is well.

Regards,
Red

Red, I enjoyed hearing about your legal exploits during the blackout Oh, and please let us know about the glove box latch fix!

I went and drove the new Acura TSX yesterday. I was a fine automobile, with very predicable at-limit handling, and teflon-smooth powertrain. Of course I drove the 6-speed manual one. It has me thinking it's slightly better dyanmically than the 3-series (gasp!). I'll have to go drive a 3-series soon to do a comparo. Overall conclusion:
Highs: awesome powertrain and great chassis dynamics
Lows: reach-away center console, cockpit best for the over-6-foot crowd
Ryan Says: Perfect for the car-enthusiast family-of-5 with one [big] garage space

-->Rachel, thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate it, I think my attitude toward teaching and my students is a direct result of the fact that I love what I do...as I have been known to tell the kiddos, if you follow your passion you will be able to get up in the morning and say "I get to go to work today!" instead of saying "I have to go to work today."

-->Red, I also enjoyed your tale...now I finally understand what that fast moving speck of light was on the edge of the aerial shots they showed on CNN..."it's a bird, its a plane...no it's Red and his MINI!!!

-->Ryan, thanks for the Acura review, I'm glad you've found a way to get out of the Neon and keep yourself entertained while you await the arrival of MM2. Do you have any mods planned for the Neon before you return it? How are you finding the wait the second time around...is it easier since you know what to expect or harder since you've already had an extended taste of motoring?

I'm starting to get geared up for the First Annual Hill Country MINI Rendezvous coming up Labor Day weekend in Fredericksburg. A group of us will be driving out together from Austin (about 90 miles) and then there is a 120 mile group drive planned with a lunch stop at Cooper's (really!) BBQ in Llano, TX. We will also visit and tour a winery while we're out. Should be well-attended and fun with folks from all over attending!

Best to all!

The Wait...again (for Cheffie)

Life is a tease right now. If I did not know what I was missing, the wait would be abstract, mentally absent, and carefree. However, I know exactly what is to come; the most mesmerizing driving experience I have ever encountered in a production automobile. Pure joy: The wait for the MINI again is tantalizing and sensually playful knowing what is at the end of the wait, however the wait itself is boundless and torturous. Driving substandard automobilia during the wait is numbing to my passion, but advantageous to my immediate pleasure at the end of the wait. Part masochistic, but all dramatic. I have already experienced the color-choice dilemma again and it was worse this time. The debate between what I already had and loved and the desire for new and different lead me to losing sleep and dreaming about alloy patina and space cloth versus anthracite and lapis leather. It feels like the delivery date is years away, and that I’ve only put in my order yesterday. Gosh, three weeks already? Perhaps this wait will not be as bad as I thought. Only 9 weeks to go, I am already a quarter the way there. Baby steps, here I am!

Very eloquent, sir...has the agony of waiting put you in touch with your "literary" side?

HEY!!!!!! Did anybody else notice that MINIHOLLAND FINALLY posted a pic. of his/her(you never know) MINI, without even stopping over here to say, "Hi" or anything!!!????? Ryan you better get that baby onto the April club website before it's lost into oblivian forever.

And Red that is a great story, but you still should have been careful...I heard on the news that there was a cop in the city writing tickets for expired meters all night!!!!!!!!!
Did you see many others on the road? We drove around my neighborhood for a little while in the dark, but I was kinda nervous about being out too late. By the way, my Xenons were freaking amazing in all that darkness, they looked almost electric blue and people were squinting when they looked in my direction

The Thruway was almost empty, that is why I was able to cruise safely at that speed so long. The standard high beams are very good. Hope I did not stress the engine, as I was doing over 4k for 30 miniutes at a time. I wanted to get home before my family burned the house down with candles!

MINI of the Hamptons adjusted my glove box latch today so it works, but they were not happy with it, and ordered another part. They again offfered to pick up my car and drop off a loaner when the part comes in! But I don't think I want someone to put 130 miles on my car!

They also replaced a fan diode which was part of a recall campaign I never heard of.

Then they gave it a "bath". More like a detailing. Wow. I should not have spent so much time cleaning it over the weekend!

Regards,
Red

Ryan, you should use your wait time to write a novel! How's the lowboy project going. I found myself in the middle of a street rod ralley today. There were some sweet machines out there.

Got tickets to the Giants/Braves game tonight, and NO WAY am I going to drive Pyro and leave him in the parking lot.

Katie, I definitely noticed that MINIHOLLAND finally posted a pic. Since he's a bit bashful, I'll take the lead and post his EB/W MCS:

Cheers,

Yeah, the Giants were pathetic against the Mets, but with 4 regulars including Barry Bonds out of the line up, what can you expect.

Barry's back, and 2 walk-off wins against the best team in baseball!

Great game last night.

Uh, Barry played that night. I sat in left field. He did nothing of note. He left the next morning to see his Dad. But that Thurday night game was called ona ccount of no electricity. Mr. Bonds is a real fan favorite in NYC!

But Piazza returned that night with 5 RBI's. And the Mets are mostly irregulars.

Hey. I am taliking baseball! I need a ride in the MINI!

Red

Have a great mini ride Red. I am envious of you mini driving mets fans. You get to finish your baseball season so much earlier than us poor mini driving giants fans
