P0340

Hello,

sort of new to the mini world. We bought our daughter a 2004 Cooper S. recently it quit while she was driving, turned over but no spark. OBD II SCAN says P0340. Put in a new cam position sensor and still no start/spark. Redid the scan and still throws the P0340?! Any help for a newbie is appreciated.

Once upon a time, I read that after replacing sensors you need to rest the ECU. Give this a try for a no cost next step:How to Reset the ECU:
  1. With the key in the ignition, but in the off position, press and hold down the odometer reset button with one hand.
  2. While holding the button down, switch the key in the ignition to position 1 (first click) with the other hand. The screen will have a number and the word “TEST”.
  3. Scroll through the numbers by pressing the odometer rest button, through to 19 and wait a moment. (Note: the number order is: 1,2,10,19)
  4. The message will say 19 "L i-off", flash to "L i-on", and back to "L i-off" again. When "log i-off" appears, press the odometer rest button again.
  5. You are now in the system. Scroll through to 21. TEST and wait a moment. 21.0 RESET will come up. Press the button once.
  6. Your gauges will now make some sounds and movements.
  7. Once the lights come back on start your car. You have now reset your ECU and your MINI is now ready to relearn the new mods and your driving style

Get your hands on a BMW/MINI specific scan tool. They often catch error codes that a generic OBDII scanner will miss.

P0340 is related to crankshaft sensor, not to camshaft sensor.Repalce crankshaft sensor and engine will start.

Ok, I used an OTC OBDII scanner and it said camshaft position sensor, did the ecu reset but no change. I’ll order a crankshaft sensor as suggested and track down a bmw scanner.

Ok. Frustrations grow. New camshaft sensor, new crankshaft sensor, new coil and wires. Reset the computer. Still no spark and no codes. If I had hair, I’d be pulling it out.

Fuse is good, new spark plugs. I put an inline spark tester and still no spark. Tested the new coil with a multi meter and it’s good. I am at a total loss.

recap
new cam position sensor
new crank position sensor
new coil,wires and plugs
new battery
cleared codes
reset imobilizer

still no spark

main grounds are good, I’ll have to start following the wires back from the coil…. The struggle is real 😵‍💫

I would check the mechanical timing of the engine (cam/crank) to make sure that your chain did not move/slip.

You said that it just quit while driving. That could be something mechanical. Go back to basics.
