R53 shredded serpentine belt

Strange issue. Couple times the engine temp shot up to max suddenly. Frantically I killed the car, turned they key to the on position and the temp read normal. I popped the hood and the car wasn't overheated at all, so I figured the sensor. If i turn the car off and back on it reads normal. But today CEL came on, no power, limp mode, dashboard lit up like a christmas tree. Then the temp gauge shot up. Limped it home and let it cool off, then popped hte hood and sure enough, serpentine belt shot. I guess I need to get it in the garage and up, but I can't help but wonder if the two issues are related. Also I have a P0456 EVAP code, reoccuring, even after the gas cap was checked. P1688 MAP sensor 2 high voltage as well.

Also check the vibration dampener, as these go bad and can cause a belt to shred!

Seconding the check on the dampener, had the belt shred on me, and the dampener was separated.

Yup that sounds like the classic crank pulley damper failure. Upgrade to an ATI damper and it will solve the problem while being an upgrade as it is lighter, and dampens better so you'll even notice the car will usually idle smoother.

Also make sure that you replace the idler pulley, mine was so loose and wobbly that the tensioner was almost at its max. I found it when I was replacing the belt and alternator.

Yes. This is what EXACTLY occurred summer 2016. Luckily I was 2 blocks from home. The pulley had separated. A "common" known occurrence in the earlier cars (2003).

Replaces with the ATI unit. Not a particularly difficult job.

Yes. Just replaced this part with quite a few others while in performing the supercharger maintenance service.

I think I'll post the images....
