Oil change interval reset.....different interval pops up

I followed the numerous procedures to reset it after an oil change. My understanding is that it should have been reset to 15,xxx miles but in my case it resets to about 12500 miles.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is this number customizable by some other procedure? I like longer OCIs but I dont care to go that long and would like to reduce the number a bit.

I completely ignore the damned thing. When the last 4 digits on my odometer read either a 5 and three zeros or four zeroes, I change the oil/filter AND rotate the tires. Many member here will agree that 5K is a choice interval to get that done.

I agree...the 15K interval is too much in my book

I reset mine today and it was 15,500 miles. I just laughed to myself. I think this interval was set to save BMW money. How? Well, if they offered free servicing for, say the first 30,000 miles that meant the cars only saw 1 oil change in that time. The warranty period was also short and it is not likely that anyone using synthetic oil at that long interval would kill an engine in just 60,000 miles. Thus, much like the "Lifetime" transmission oil, the definition of lifetime is determined by BMW's financial responsibility for the car. I remember seeing a 100,000 mile 330CI (E46) with full service history and opening the oil filler cap only to discover the engine full of sludge. Yes, the owner followed the factory's recommendation, but no, it wasn't a good idea.

The mileage indicator does take into account your driving.......so mileage may differ.
BUT.....do not use it as it is way to generous on the oil change interval. Stick with a more moderate interval.

I just did the oil on the weekend and reset the service interval. It came up with 25,000kms...it think that like 15K miles. In any case, there is a 2nd number flashing now...are there 2 service indicators? It's flashing -1300....so whatever it is it's overdue. I don't use these features, I change oil everytime I change my undies. Just want to know what it is.

Very interesting posts. I guess since I do lots of city driving it might be a lower amount. I never intended to push my OCI(s) out that far. I'll shoot for 5k as I think that will allow me a little bit of a buffer if I forget.

Thanks.

Rather than mileage, use calendar (as I do) to do it. Take regular miles and figure out best interval on a calendar. Then you can use it to remind you of service time.

I just changed the oil on our 2014 Countryman and the interval reset to only 7000 miles. I actually reset it twice thinking that was an error, but it stayed at 7000. My wife is the primary driver and her commute with a new job has dropped to about three miles, so I think the computer takes into account the amount of city vs highway and length of trip when calculating the next oil change interval.
