R50/53 Oil Change Interval Reset
Oil Change Interval Reset
I'm considering changing my oil for the first time.
If I do, I'd like to be able to reset the 15,000 mile interval so that I can track when it's time for the next oil change.
Any advice on how to do this without taking the car into the deal?
Thanks
Katie

Also please do not follow the 15k interval. You will need the special oil filter tool..I got mine off of amazon.
..google Mini Cooper oil change pelican parts . R53 is the cooper s while r50 is the regular cooper.
Just curious where in NYC (given your screen name) are you planning on doing this change? I also live in NYC and feel kind of awkward even popping the hood in NYC...let alone climbing under the car :-)
Also expect some spills and messes...DOT will not look kindly upon you if you spill all over the street..place a tarp on the ground...and have plenty of rags on hand.
Getting the oil filter canister off was a little bit tricky...as was getting it back on. I recommend you also have a breaker bar on hand.
Order an extra oil drain plug..there are a few threads on here stating its not necessary each time but it's better to have one on hand vs not.

Dumb question new mini owner. I'm getting change oil light and the mileage indicator started counting down from 5,000. It's now at 4,000 when I start the car. Does this mean the oil needs to be changed in 4,000 miles or is past due by 4,000 to be changed? Sorry to hijack your thread. "related question" Thanks

It means its 4000 away from the recommended oil change interval...meaning its been 11000 miles since the last change. I'd suggest changing the oil as soon as possible. 15000 miles is insane IMO. I change mine every 4-5k.
FYI, there is no 'change oil light'. There is a service indicator in the tach, but that always displays upon startup. If you have a red light on, that's not a change oil light, but a warning light that you have low/no oil pressure.
Still learning the car thanks for your help I appreciate it!
