Alternator Pulley Question

This past week the pulley for my alternator came off. The pulley and nut were still in the engine compartment. My question is this - Is the pulley keyed? Also, what type of washer do I use?

Thanks for any help.

if it was keyed, it would have a keyway. as for the washer, it just needs to be thick enough to keep the alignment of the pulley

I'm trying to figure out if I will need a woodruff key when I put the pulley back on...I'm figuring if it does, I probably lost it. was also wondering if washer is a lock washer or flat. thx for any help.

if the nut isn't a lock nut, it would be a good idea to have a lock washer. im only speculating, I haven't redone the alt pulley. but im sure its not driven by a spline or press fit since your finding a nut.

if it is a woodruff key, Id be surprised its still not on the shaft, they are usually pressed in

One tip...
Have a picture?
Unfortunately many people replace the OEM unit with cheap aftermarket units....I bet your unit is one, since the pulley is all needs an impact gun to remove...bet it was not put on tight....and as such, there might be some differences from unit to unit.
Many aftermarket alternators are sold without a pulley....the reasons are two fold...one is cost, but another is simply the same unit might fit multiple cars, but with different sized pullies.

My suggestion...take the alternator to a local auto parts place...many will install a pulley for a fee or free if you buy an alternator....bet they have a drawer of parts. Might need to slip the guy $10 or so...but it will be done right.

thanks for the replies....It is an aftermarket Alternator that was installed at the local MINI Shop here in town..however I have put many miles on since...never had this occur on any car ever...Zippy. I was hoping to avoid pulling out the Alternator, but if I need to, then that will be the path I will take. I was very lucky that the pulley and nut stayed in the engine compartment.
