EZ pass issues

Hey all,

I live in Baltimore MD and require to take a toll everyday going to work. Recently I've receive a EZ pass and mounted it to my windshield. I've gone through the toll a few times now and it doesn't register the ez pass, I've tried moving it but still no luck. I've resorted to just having to hold it out the sun roof going trough the toll and that seems to work lol, anyone else have a problem with theirs? Are mini windshields too small? I have a r53.

I just came through MD on the way from NJ and had no issues with my EZPass on the windshield.

I have mine right below the mirror, I even plasti dipped it black so it blends in better and it is one of the small ones, not the credit card style. No problems, I'm getting charged.

Never have had an issue...
How old is your transponder? They do die...
Heck...folks have even mounted them in the sunroof in a mini....under the shade...
Only folks I ever heard of having issues had a METALIC WINDOW TINT FILM....that is WHY most places now use different films...they interfere with cell phones and transponders...so if you don't have a extra "strip" if tint added (some folks do this to the top of the window)...I would guess the unit you have is defective....if you do have a strip of extra tint. (Not factory blure tint)...mount below the tint...but the transponders fit perfect behind the mirror...can't see it.

I originally had it behind the tint and moved it to so the toll could read it it and it still didn't work. I tried it behind the windshield once again moving it in a very clear spot and it didn't work. The transponder is pretty much brand new. Maybe it's just a weak one or something? Not sure lol.

Wow that's a great idea, I love Platidip

OP I had my windshield replaced the other day and also my EZpass for the the new smaller size one like yours and I have no problems, the new windshield comes with an updated small dotted shade by the rear view mirror and that's where I mounted mine, it works fine in NY/NJ even on the Express lane at 55MPH
I think that yours is defective

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm gonna try it a couple more times and if it doesn't work and or I have to keep holding my arm out the window, I'm gonna talk to ez pass.

I've got two transponders (one for each car - a MINI and a VW), and there's one toll booth I use regularly where the MINI fails to read occasionally. I've been told by EZ Pass that it's due to weak reader equipment at that toll, but since this doesn't happen in my VW I also think that the near vertical windshield angle of the MINI contributes to the problem. The VW has a more sloped windshield, as does the Volvo V60 that I also use and they don't have trouble. At any rate, in NH at least it doesn't matter since a mis-read transponder just shoots a photo of the license plate to charge you and there's no penalty. We still have the older large passes up here.

I have it on the sunroof here in NJ. I hate the way it looks on the windshield and NEVER had a problem with any car and EZPass on the sunroof. That is if there is a sunroof.

Had the same type of problem with my transponder. It would work sometimes, then only when held out the window, then never. Ended up having a replacement sent and it's been working fine ever since.

JeffM, you can have the transponder tested, I drive the ICC to work every day, and at least once every 3 months i have to send MD a copy of my receipts from my Delaware ez pass. This last go round with them, it seems there equipment is defective, the toll shows as paid, however MD's reader is show a 2 minute delay. This is the only place i have an issue with the ez pass, works fine in VA, PA and the trip to NY.

I have had them test it in the past - EZPass says the transponder is just fine, and admitted that the toll booth I go through has old weak equipment so it's probably a combination of the MINI being bad placement, and the reader overhead being weak. I haven't had any trouble recently, so they may have fixed things on their end.
