Dumb question about brake light assembly 04" Cooper S

I just changed out my wife's brake light assemblies and noticed that the top bulbs on both assemblies don't light up when I hit the brakes or turn on the headlights. The middle turn signal lights and the bottom brake light/tail lights in both assemblies work fine. I checked both top bulbs and them seem fine, but I'm now thinking that they are the wrong ones because they both have single filaments and assume (yeah I know) that they should have double filaments like the bottom bulbs.

Am I correct in thinking that the top bulbs should be the same as the bottom bulbs?

Thanks for any help!

...by the way we're going to North Carolina to meet up with my son and his wife in July so we're looking forward to hitting the "Dragon"...I'd like as much brake light as I can get (not that I plan on using them too much )

There are TWO different INCOMPATIBLE tail light assemblys on gen1 MINI's...
the Pre-facelift (pre 2004) had no backup lights..it was in the bumper...
the model year 2005+ facelift cars had the backu lights built into the rear lights, NOT the bumpe...when this was done...the REAR FOG lights were moved....
E-bay, etc usually lists ALL MINI's as using the same tail lights.....but it is not simply true...

PS...
The tops are OFTEN (not sure WHICH tails you have ..OEM? or aftermarket?) not used...and reserved as the REAR FOGLIGHT....so it might be ok...
some folks do a PAPERCLIP mod (warning some have fried a BCM so $500 part..think back-feeding up the wired to the BCM) to get the tops to light up....
Like I said..not sure WHICJ tails you have..folks sometimes swap to newer ones to "update the look"....

Gotcha Zippy...mine is the pre 04' with the backup light in the bumper. Do you know what the top light bulb holders are for? (brake light / tail light, or combined?)

Thanks for being quick to respond :D

Sorry just saw the second post. Mine are the original assemblies.

Hmmm...I think I'll just let them be instead of tempting fate and frying something with a paperclip.

Thanks again Zippy! :D

Think the top on that year is for the rear fogs...
On the 2005, the backup light was moved to the baxkup lights, but the rear fog option was moved (when installed) to the lower bumper where your backup light is....
You might want to try this...easy install..about $30
3rd Brake Light Pulsar kit for MINI Cooper
These units will flash your third center brake light about after you apply your brakes and then brake light will remain on without flashing as long as your brake lights are on.

Using surface mount technology, this little unit was designed to be as small as we could get it for our MINI's and it fits nicely into the third brake light cavity.

The pulsar module allows you to select Long or Short pulse duration during installation by moving the jumper by the S and L. The Short setting pulses the light about 6 times while the Long pulses it about 10 times.

After getting many requests from owners who live in high stop and go traffic areas like Los Angeles, we developed the second generation PULSAR with SmartPulse technology. When in stop and go traffic, SmartPulse will stop the third brake light from pulsating. When you hold your brake pedal down for more than 12 seconds and then reapply your brake within 9 seconds, this unit will not pulse the third brake light. It will come on solid. When you reapply your brakes after 12 seconds, the unit will pulse your third brake light again.

If you do not wish to have the SmartPulse enabled, simply remove the jumper at J4 and the unit will behave like a gen1 PULSAR.

Installation is very simple. Unscrew your third light, connect to the wiring and reinstall the light.

One of the first mods I did on my mini....

Awesome thx Zippy I'll have to check that out!

I appreciate the help...the flashing should get the slower drivers attention on the Dragon :D

Top lights are designed to be fog lights. As Zippy said, some use jumpers to make more brake lights, but that wasn't their intended purpose.
