Found this salvage titled 2004 S for sale in New York...Found rather interesting. Yes, this car will be purchased and rebuilt and then be put up for sale somewhere.

This 2003 S recently sold for $9900...

Your dead-on. I instruct defensive driving techniques for a utility company. I want to know the story behind every accident. I am not looking for the blood and gore, just the facts that lead up to these collisions. What exactly happened? Was anyone injured? Where will these cars end up? Do the new buyers have any idea what they just purchased? Are these buyers cutting up two cars and welding the good halves back together? I know these front wheel drive Mini's are usually considered totalled by insurance companies when front end damage is involved.

This link www.wreckedexotics.com/is one of my favorite sites

Ouch........I bet THAT gets fixed and smuggled down to Argentina or somewhere..... I met someone once who made a living doing that......would even chop a car in half (like a 911) import it as "junk" or used parts and then weld the sucker together and sell it.......YIKES!

You are correct. The salvage titles laws need to tightened up so these poorly repaired salvaged vehicles (look great, except in the weld areas you can't see) don't end up for sale. Many of these are unsafe to be on the road. Here in CA, they have no annual vehicle safety inpection. If they did, I quess at least 5% of the vehicles would be out of commission due to faulty brakes, tires, etc. Insurance companies are not stupid. If they could repair the vehicle they would

In the future, maybe jot down and post the VIN's of these cars? Not that such a thing would be fool-proof, but at least there could be a recod of the car somewhere.

Cool job indeed! So can we really trust CarFax?

The wrecked Mini actually does not look THAT bad. The question is why it was considered a total loss... expensive parts, complex build, and mostly the airbags. The airbags fired because the front strut tower was bent. I wonder what the "hidden" damage was...

I have my doubts. My car was wrecked twice each time the costs was between $2000 and $3400 dollars. Neither showed up on a car fax report.

Just curious but why wouldn't someone part out the car, couldn't you make more money parting it out?

I don't think it's always just the amount of damage that decides if it's a total or not.

My '04 Mazda 3 was just totalled. It had 10K worth of damage so far and it was going to be repaired but some of the parts were not available for about two months. The insurance totalled it vs paying for a rental for two more months (they had paid for one month already)

I would think the same thing could happen with a mini since you can't easily buy the cars I bet the parts are just as hard to get.

That could also be true. The insurance company is looking at the bottom line. What will cost it the least in the long run? I've scene large trucks totalled simply because the owners had a loss of use in their policy. By the time they tally up for repairs and loss of use, it is easier to total it and have the claim over with.
Insurance companies also look at the other end of a claim. What is this car worth as salvage? If they can get more in return as salvage, they can write less damage and still total it.
