R50/53 My HK amp died. Ugh!!
A new one installed at the dealer runs around 1100 dollars. I just got a new head unit, four Rockford fosgate speakers and two tweeters, and a Rockford fosgate amp for less than that! And yes, it was confusing going from the digital H/K system to a regular system...

Sounds like the second option is the way to go!! Its a shame there isn't a easier way to go with a good aftermarket amp..lol.. So the HK amp only deals with the sound system? Or does it do other things none related to the sound system?

I had the Harmon Kardon system. I replaced the amp with a 300 watt Rockford Fosgate one that was even smaller than the H/K one so I put it in the same place. Using a wiring schematic and multimeter determined which of the 40 or so wires from amp went to each speaker and grounds and what not and just cut them and soldered my own terminals on them so I didn't have to run my own cables. I ran RCA cables from the head unit back to the amp. Definitely glad I did it, it all sounds amazing.
