R50/53 I have joined the club!
Ok Guys... It started with my trip to Florida. I took my '04 EB MINI down and had the air running the whole time. I realized right away what everyone described as "the stumble". There were moments I tried to make a left hand turn and almost killed myself because the car had absolutly no power and there were oncoming cars!
And then yesterday, I took my DS MINI for a car wash... when it came out, a huge crack appeared on the windshield. Yup... I now understand the constant griping on this site.
Anyway... thank you for listening.

well first years warernty issues are common, the dealer will take car of all that you have there with a new cpu upgrade and a new windsheild.. I'd suggest puttign maskgin tape over the crack, that way when they do teh "pen-Test" you can prove teh crack is a stress crack and not form a rock that hit it, even if one does AFTER you get the stress crack in the windsheild.

Ouch,
That reminds me of the last time I lost a windscreen. About 10 years ago, I had a vehicle with a tiny star from a rock ship in the glass. On a hot day, I parked the car outside, alongside a building with a window unit air conditioner about three stories up. Yes, but it's not what you think.
Upon returning to the car after an hour or two, I discovered that water that had dripped down from the A/C unit, had landed on the top of my car, it then ran down the windscreen, some of it passing over the star. As the water expanded because of the heat of the day, it caused the star to grow from one end of the glass to the other. Nowadays, I use epoxy crack fixer whenever I get a small crack, to avoid a repeat.

I don't think your club is one that I want to join anytime soon but for some reason some MINI owners have been through 5 or 6 windshields while others have the originals with no problems.
Obviously it is not something that shows up with every MINI but could be related to many factors including a design that is prone to trouble if the right conditions exist or a defect in materials from variable sources or your driving environment in the case of exposure to climate or rocks/road debris.
I know my area doesn't have windshield troubles. The midwest area group seems to have quite a few.
Sorry to hear about your problem. Time to visit your dealer.

I am wondering if, just prior to the car wash, you were driving under the conditions of a hot day. The sudden change in temperature from heat to cold could cause a stress crack. Just my .02 cents worth.

Don't hassle me. I'm driving as fast as I possibly can</P>

Hey, cracking windshields isn't just a MidWest problem, though I WAS travelling through the midwest when I got my first crack--11 days into owning my MC. Started from a rock kicked up by a truck, and combine that with heavy frost and snow at Yellowstone Park, the crack grew 5 inches!
Wondering how cold is that? Well, my car was really dirty, so I filled a bucket in my room with hot soapy water. I poured it on my car, and it froze instantly. My sponge stuck like glue! Heh heh, lesson learned, don't wash your car when it's freezing outside, something us Californian's rarely experience!
