R50/53 3rd Gear "Clunk"
Still being a newbie, and a new newbie at that, I don't know if I'm being over paranoid or not with this, but it's my new baby, so indulge me here.
Picked-up my '02 MC on Monday. Five words: Fun As All Get Out
Now, everything about the car seems great and tight. It's a blast to drive and gives you great feel. Anyway, I noticed this morning that I'm getting a "clunk" in the gear shift going into 3rd that I really haven't heard before. Yes, I drove the car a lot without the radio even on over the past four days to "hear" the car and this is the first time I really noticed it.
Normal or not?
Thanks.

First off, congrats on your MINI
Most likely, it's just your MINI being noisy. The MCS's tranny likes to clunk and make ungraceful noises from time to time; the Midlands may be similar. That said, the Midlands transmission in the Cooper has always had problems with general reliability. Hopefully, yours is just loud and isn't on the fritz.
Hope that helps,
Ryan

mine snickers into the gates too. if it clunks, try clutch-in a little late
while you slightly roll off the gas and let your syncro's do its thing before
physically moving the lever into the gate.
You might be entering the gates too soon before the collars had
time to spin down enough.

Good point. I am a quick shifter and the MINI and I are still getting to know each other.

>>string - if the clunk happens more than a few times, def get it checked. As Ryephile mentioned, the MC 5- speeds have had some "issues"
Roger that. Just got back from a *cough* extended lunch hour *cough* and slowed down the throw a little bit. It does seem like I was hitting the gate too quick. But, I will have them check it out next service.
Thanks guys! This is a great board!
