Jack Alternatives

I've been trying to find a suitable jack/handle for my R53. I test-drove a similar model to mine, and it had a zipper bagged scissor jack in the boot/trunk that hooked onto hooks so it wouldn't roll around. Seemed like a factory thing, but the Mini dealer doesn't seem to know anything about it. (They only sell the crank/footed type that comes in the R56 toolkit.)

What have any of you figured as a solution when you remove your RFTs and roll old school? I have a spare tire/wheel on the way but I can't find a perfect aftermarket jack. Something small that might fit inside the spare wheel would be ideal.

Any ideas?

Look in the marketplace or on ebay; the tool kits frequently show up for sale.

Scissor jack and tool kit was standard on the R53.

Here is the link to the MINI parts numbers.

Hmmm... not the tool kit I have. Maybe it was standard unless the purchaser opted for RFTs? I doubt Mini would have included the jack/kit if the car had run-flats on it. That's not a scissor jack anyway, it's the crank jack I mentioned earlier.

I'm not knocking the crank style jacks, I just thought a scissor-type would possibly fit nicely inside the spare wheel for storage.

As said above, they are on the marketplace from time to time, ebay possibly, or a junk yard certainly.

Keep your eyes open and/or place a wanted ad.

Here you go.

Nice find! That's what I saw in the other car's boot. The dealer parts guy had no idea...

The link shows the part numbers for the various parts. The jack is a half scissor type as was stock in my 04 S. Not sure what you mean by crank type.

The kink on ebay is the kit that came stock with the S.

RFT were the only tires available on the S.

Our 05 MCS came with runflats and a jack as described by the original poster (in a bag with hooks). Non-runflats weren't an option. I asked our MA why the jack, he didn't know. I never bothered carrying the jack, even when we had real (not runflat) tires on him.

My 05 S came with runflats (like all did), and that jack in a bag.

I just used that jack to swap out the wifes snow tires. She only has the 2 fronts and it is easier for me to just do them by hand rather than moving things around and using the lift. Really a pretty nice design.

Maybe Mini gave up on the jack for the '06 model year...? The ebay auction (above) stated the jack was from an '05, so that's probably why it didn't come up in my search. I bid on it, though - but somebody else wanted it a lot more than I did!

Right. But the bagged jack doesn't look like it is stored in the large "foam" tool holder. IOW, I think the options were either the bagged, separate jack plus the smaller toolkit, or large toolkit with the jack fitted inside (no bag). My boot does have the metal hoops where the bagged jack would hook onto, and I have the small toolkit, though the other '06 MCS I test-drove did have the jack in a bag - maybe because the other was an automatic? Odd.

The stock Mini jack looks like the footed "elevator-style" jack, like most of my previous BMWs had. Wind the crank/handle and the jack lifts the car in an elevator (escalator?) motion, as opposed to scissors. We may be talking about the same thing - semantics.

Lol, yeah, "sorry, other bidder!" (seriously) He probably would have got it for $5 if not for my meddling. Instead - $40 with shipping.

My '06 R53 has the same bag-type kit as shown in the Ebay link.

After having a stock jack fail on me. I'd be damned if I trusted one. I currently carry a Honda jack in the car it is much more stable and less likely to slip on a smooth surface. Price should be about 10-20 at any local salvage yard.
