R50/53 Double door lock annoyance.
Double door lock annoyance.
Hi everyone, I've been cruising these forums since I bought my 2003 mini in early august, and I have not found the answers I desire (I read this thread and it really wasn't much help). So can you all help me?
You know that deal where you double pull to unlock and open your door? How do I get it to lock as I take off driving, but open the door with only one pull?
Also, there is little twisty key looking thing in the back of my glove box. The book doesn't say anything about what exactly that might be. Does anyone know?
thanks for all the answers in advance.

You can only change the lock functions your talking about with a BMW computer that does vehicle coding. Tell your dealer what you want and they will hook up their computer and reprogram the options to what you want.

The auto lock can be enabled at the dealer, but the single pull unlock & open is unobtainable. I asked about that at the dealer and the tech who was there said he could do nothing about it. Oddly enough, my sister's early '02 has a single pull unlock and open. The tech might have just been ignorant, but he apparently looked through the programmable options with my car hooked up when they turned the daytime running lights off.
That twisty thing in the glove box is the valve for the heated/cooled glove box feature.

Perfect. Does it cost anything to change those features, or should I say, did it cost you to change those features? And Woot I have a cooled glove box. That's a neato thing. I don't know what to do with it, but cool (or warm).
My BMWs and Mini have the same thing. My understanding is when you lock the doors the doors lock and the pins drop. If they smash a window to get in, they will need to go out that same window, unless they get a key. The first pull sets the pins, the second opens the door. This what the dealer said when I bought my first BMW years ago. Any truth to this? Or was it BS?

The dealer charged me $20 to fix this and turn off my DRL's on my '03 MCS, the way to get this feature is to have them program the doors to unlock when you turn off the engine and remove the key, that way you only have to pull the handle once.
Mine still lock automatically as before.......

On my '06, I have auto lock at 10 mph, and auto unlock on turning off the motor. It was programmed by the dealer at my request. I think later in '06 the auto unlock was changed to when the key was removed.
I had ours programmed to not auto lock and to autounlock when switched off. 99% of the time that worked, there was still the odd occasion where you'd manually locked and hadn't yet turned the engine off. The double unlock is just annoying.

I was just looking at your sig.........4 MINI's.....nice you beat me by 1. 03 MCS, 05 MCS and 06 MCS.....
There's been many times where a passenger has came very close to pulling off the handle.
Regardless of how many times I've explained the "double pump" thing.
Both our doors unlock, but I also had them programmed to unlock both doors with one click of the remote (rather than click-drivers door, click-click passenger door). Maybe that's the difference..

I know this is an older thread but thought it might be of use to someone. I was suffering from a lot of the same symptoms that several of you describe. The double pull dilemma. I have found that single pull IS obtainable. (2003 Cooper S)
I did not take the car in for reprogramming. I just kind of accidentally stumbled onto some possible solutions after a few other things I was doing.
Mine works like this now:
- doors lock automatically at 10 mph.
- doors unlock automatically when key is turned off.
- one pull to open doors.
Here are the things I did in between it working ineffectively to fixed:
1) Disconnect the battery. It may be just that simple.
2) My passenger side door was not opening from the inside pull and my drivers side inside pull was requiring me to almost completely lift it for any action, so I removed the door panels and reattached the cables in the places where I found them to go. The passenger side, I completely removed the locking mechanism so I could figure it out first.
So somewhere in these actions…I fixed my annoying problem. You be the judge of what made the difference.
Also noted during this process:
Disconnecting the battery renders the trunk inoperable until you reconnect the battery.
cheers,
dag
