These mods ok?

Still new to this but i'm looking to get a detroit 15% SC pulley, 2% Crank pulley and bpv. Also will be changing to a heat range cooler plug. Are these mods fairly safe? Also will the stock belt work since i'll be running a 2% crank pulley?

These mods are pretty safe and reliable. One thing is that a 15% pulley is safest for ur supercharger. By adding the 2% pulley you are essentially creating a 17% pulley. ALot of people run this set up, or just a straight 17% reduction, but 15% alone is the safest in terms of what is safer than others just because its less strain on the supercharger. Depending on the number of miles you have on your car, anything more than 20 or 30k i would replace the stock belt no matter waht, and i think u would need a smaller belt with both pulleys. Good luck, and when i did my bpv and pulley it was amazing! Have Fun!

I have NEVER -- in 6 years -- heard of anyone regretting a 15% SC pulley mod - on ANY '02-'06 "S". The bpv is a good and absolutely safe -- mod. The 2% lightened crank pulley is only SLIGHTLY different in that some claim (but have never proven to my satisfaction) that the lightened crank pulley (of ANY size) is a "potential" threat to allow your engine to be damaged by harmonic vibrations, shortening its life or even leading (over time) to catastrophic damage. Just do a search on "crank pulley" and you are sure to find enough of that stuff to choke on.

Another argument over the 15% vs higher-SC-revving pulley arrangements (whether SC+crank, or just 17-19% SC pulleys) is that any greater than 15% starts to counter the significantly larger volume of air flow with a significantly hotter charge into the cylinders, thus -- supposedly -- limiting the gains one can achieve by speeding up the SC more than 15% (or 16% -- see SC pulley offered by m7 and discussions of JCW OEM pulley size) faster than OEM speeds, due to the negative impact of higher temperature inputs on HP. Who is right? Well as far as the temperature discussion, it seems to depend some on how much and under what circumstances (e.g., street vs track). But that is what has made the quest for a better intercooler such an important performance issue with the '02-'06 "S".

Personally, I stopped at the 15% pulley (as far as engine pulley mods) although I have been tempted to go with a 0% lightened crank pulley, I have just never put out the $ to do it. I never wanted to go the >15% high-temp route that would get me looking for the better IC -- that just seemed like a lot MORE $ for relatively small gain, since I have been and will be for a while a daily driver in tough traffic with enough over-heating concerns without adding to them. If the 16% had been available when I did the 15%, though, I might have done that instead of the 15 -- on the grounds that it is --allegedly -- roughly equivalent to the JCW pulley setup. Bear in mind, however, that the JCW has other "mods" including different tune, that allow it to capitalize on the smaller SC pulley.

In any case, once you get whatever pulley(s) you are getting for the foreseeable future, you will benefit much more if you then get an ECU tune (that remaps the ignition) to take greater advantage of the mechanical mods. You can read about various tunes until you are old. I won't start on that here.

Jeez, was that a long-enough answer for you?

Happy modding!!

Great info. Thanks guys. I'll probably pass on the crank pulley. May be putting a sub in anyway so I don't need to reduce the charging. I found a 16% pulley but now I can't find it again lol. Who makes the 16% pulleys? Also who makes pretty much the best CAI? Alta, DDS...

I would say they are safe! I don't have the crank pulley, but have been running the 15% for over 170k miles

Once you start modding you're not gonna want to stop!

Edit: see you're already asking about cai's! They are all good - I've had the alta forever and have been very happy w/ it.

The Alta is my fav, its really good looking, and performing, and sounds prob the best in my opinion. Im a big fan of alta parts in general, and M7 makes the 16% pulley.

nonononoNO to the crank pulley. However, look into getting a lightened pulley if you really want some more engine responsiveness. Less moment of inertia will theoretically allow your engine to spin up faster, however I really doubt you will be able to notice the difference with such a small moment of inertia change.

If you're really looking for a boost in engine responsiveness, go for a lightweight flywheel.

Thanks for all the input guys. I ordered a 15% pulley, plugs and BPV. Can't wait to get them on the car.
