2004 Cooper S interior lights

I have a 2004 Cooper S. My interior light does not automatically turn on when the door is opened.
Any advice?

sorry for the dumb question, does it work when you push the button to manually turn it on?

The map lights work when turned on. When the doors are opened no lights turn on. That is my dilema.

Does this include the footwell lights? How about the trunk light?

Since you have a 2004, all you have is the dome light with the 2 rear map lights (2005+ MINIs have front map lights in addition to the rears and courtesy flood lights underneath each front door).

The 2 map lights are not supposed to lightup when you open the door, only the main dome light. When you press the switch on the dome light assembly, does the central dome, footwell and trunk lights turn on?

If not you may have a bad dome light, bad switch, bad fuse or simply a burnt bulb.

Thanks for the reply.
The dome light does not turn on when the button is pressed so Im guessing that the fuse must be gone.

Or the bulb needs replacing.

have you checked the bulb itself? i have an 04 MCS and it has center dome, rear trunk and footwell lights all come on when you open a door, or click the key fob! i would check bulbs and fuse! cheap and easy inspections!

Thanks,
What would the key fob do regarding the lights?

Unlocking or unlocking the doors will activate the interior lights. If you lock the doors, wait 10 secs, and lock the doors again (press the keylock button in your fob) the lights should turn on as well.

It seems to me all you need is a replacement light bulb.

i had the same problem with my 04 mcs a year or so ago. my interior lights (dome, boot, footwell) did not work when i opened the doors or used the remote. couldnt figure it out myself but my local service guy (holland car care in san mateo) was able to fix it. he said the interior light system needed to be reset. i dont know the specifics but i remember him saying something about pressing and holding the map light buttons... he said its a bmw thing and in the service manual

I've turned my 04's interior lights off (just to try it). If memory serves me right, all I had to do was push and hold the dome light button with the door open until the lights shut off. To undo the process, it was just a matter of pushing and holding the button again until the lights (dome, footwell, and trunk light) came back on.

Hope this helps!
