No, the Z24 was 3 years ago. Now I am driving a 2006 Mazda 3 GT. My lease is up in May of 2009. The guy had his Mini stored for the winter and was willing to wait the winter to sell it to me in May.

Its ashame the deal fell through!

So here's a question for the 1st Gen crowd, can the MFSW be added to this 05 Mini to give it cruise? I've seen folks doing that with the 2nd gen models.

You can have a Multi function steering wheel in a car with out one from the factory, I had it done for a customer a long time ago. The problem is you will have to come up with some serious cash to make it happen.

Cruise control can be retrofitted, at a price of course. You wife has a point.... I personally would not buy a car without cruise control. Long highway driving trips are made more pleasant by having it (Helps improve fuel economy too and makes the car more selleable).

I also own a 2005 Cooper S Chili/Red, 6-speed, cruise, trip computer, chrome exterior package, rain sensor, self dimming rearview mirror with Homelink buttons, anthracite dash, Harmon Kardon stereo CD, iPod adaptor, leatherette seats, front/rear fogs, 16" S-Winders wheels and Union Jack Roof flag (No sunroof) and 51K miles with coverage of the MINI Extended service contract until 100K miles (Clutch, brake pads, rotors, oil changes are all prepaid until then).

Unfortunately, the car is not for sale unless I get $22K for it on the spot.

You can swap the steering wheel as well.

Cruise control is dangerous, some scientists believe.

Over two years of owning MINIs and several long trips in them and I've never once used cruise control.

I want to drive the MINI, I don't want it to drive itself.

Other cars... yeah, let them drive themselves, they're not that much fun to drive anyway.

I know no one cares what I feel, but I have cruise because it came with my MINI. I personally do not understand the great desire for cruise. I'm with the previous poster, I like to drive my MINI, even on long all day trips. If I could, I would remove my cruise and sell it to you guys. If you don't want to be involved in the driving experience, get a limo with a driver.

Seriously, from what I observe when riding with other drivers who use cruise, they have never found a comfortable driving position. Most of them sit far too close and are forced to bend their knees too much and get into an uncomfortable position, so they are constantly looking for other places to put their legs. Most of these people are in a NASCAR driving position, another thing I have never understood. How the hell do you drive when you have that huge steering wheel up against your chest????? Oh well.

I swore I would never get a car with cruise control, too, but as I have aged and developed ankle problems, cruise has become a necessity rather than a luxury. On long trips with my foot in the same position, the pain and discomfort become so bad that I my mind is taken off of my driving and that is a dangerous thing. Short trips of less than an hour or drives involving a lot of acceleration/deceleration (like track days or the Dragon) are not a problem. I like to enjoy the driving experience as much as anyone else but I don't consider long hauls at a constant speed on the freeway as much of a driving experience.

+1 . I thought I would really regret not having it but for some reason I don't find myself missing it. I seem to be able to involuntarily regulate highway speed -- must be my subconscious detecting the engine RPMs or something.

Basically we use cruise to avoid speeding tickets!!! Sometimes the next thing you know, your doing 140 km on highway instead of 100.

Is that bad foot control driving??? I dont know but imsure it happens to everyone once and awhile

Cruise control is great. Last I checked you still have to steer and control the car even with it engaged

In long boring stretches of highway, cruise control makes driving more comfortable. Plus you fuel economy is improved as you manage to keep a more constant speed.

Having said this, the cruise control in the R53 is adequate. I much prefer the cruise control application in the newer MINIs (R56 and Clubman). It is much more accurate and maintains speed better over hillier terrain.

It is amusing to read posts claiming that cruise control is some sort of autopilot. All cruise control does is transferring gas pedal control from your right foot to the buttons in the steering wheel

Cruise control still demands attention. You still have to steer the car. You still have to hit the brakes....You still have to down and upshift (If manual).

Cruise control does none of the above... Except, holding a preset speed.

Fire away!

It's only dangerous on ice or in potential hydroplane situations. Once a drive tire breaks loose with cruise on the cruise control will accelerate and decelerate the engine RPMs as it seeks to maintain the set speed. It will go into an over-correction frenzy! Some urban legends around this as both the tach and the speedometer will also show the overcorrections.
