Morn'n all,

I decided to go back to work and here's what I finally decided to be when I grow up

I went thru a extremely lengthy interview process w/ a company called.... Huntington Learning Center. It's an organization that tutors/remediates children.

I was offered/accepted a positon as Center Director for a local center here on LI.
It's all about the "kids"...which is what sold me on this place .
We help remediate those children who have had less than positive experiences in grades K-12. Each child is individually /group tutored and introduced to a positive learning model with a focus on self development and building self esteem.

What could be bad ...lol...

I'm starting my 4th day this AM.... and I still want to go to work...so this is probably a good sign. More important than that... it seems....'they" still want me to continue to show up

Wish me luck

Peace,
D

Dennis-- Congrats. We all have a need to feel that our work is important. Sounds like yours easily is. Is your time spent with the students directly, more directing the tutors, or more creating the educational programs? If been president of a local school board for some time and I find it all interesting and all worthwhile.

God speed.

Dennis, it takes a certain type of person to work with kids. Not many can handle the stress and the ups and downs of their lives. You seem to have this quality in you! Good luck and god bless!

Good for you! Kids today need more programs like this, and more people like you that care. My son Ezra is only in first grade and already experiencing the downfalls of the public education system, and its teachers who are not paid enough and dont care. My 9 year old daughter Asia is perfect, and there for has no problem in school, but Ezra is not according to there charts, and ways of teaching. If you are sensitive special and unique you get mowed over not encouraged to grow. So Good luck! On your great new job!

Dennis,

Thanks for sharing your new career move with us! I know that with a thoughtful guy like you there, the kids are going to be in very good hands! Plus, look at the important exposure to automotive design you are giving them, tee hee!

Very best of luck to you on your new path, Sweetie! *kisses*

Cheers!

Best of luck, D... as the spouse of a 5th grade teacher (who works in a school district with a very poor average income, broken homes, and gang pressures) I completely understand your decision. I for one am not the same person you are and do not have the patience to deal in this much needed area of "service"...

I truly wish you and more importantly those kids who find their way to your program, the best...

G.

I used to teach at a regular high school, then at an alternative school for kids who had various reasons for not doing well. Some were "delinquents" and some "slow". What we found was that in a smaller setting and with more attention they got lots more appreciative and learned quicker. Huge classrooms were too much for their needs.

This could also be seen as a metaphor: the joy of the MINI is far healthier than coveting tons of metal.

I hope and think you'll find this to be true and join the others in praising your spirit.

Dennis, as a long time middle school teacher in an area where the demographics are on the low end of the socio-economic spectrum, I frequently have frustrating days, but it's easy to look back and say it was worth it at the end of the day, the week, the year. Not a lot of more important things one can do in today's world, it seems to me. Congrats, and hope you'll always feel like going to work in the morning.

Dennis,

That's great news. I hope they realize what they have got in you.

You have the opportunity to make a tremendous difference as director. The proof will be in the pudding.
The joy will be in the process of growth of each student- and you can be there every inch of the way or watch from the distance.

Best of luck and enjoy what life has to give you.
Has anyone at work noticed how sweet your MINI is?
About the only ride that could complete would be a custom vintage Harley in your parking stall.

Dennis,

Is this place named that because it is in Huntington Long Island?

I grew up on LI and was not getting the best of grades so just before High School my parents took me to some form of learning center after school. They put me through testing and tutoring in Math and Reading... They had some cool early computers (we're talking the late 70's here) and I got a kick out of it because I could move at my own pace.

Anyway, before the year was out I finished all the material they had for my current grade level and the two that followed
