NAM needs a DIY sticky thread!

Ok guys...I am always searching for DIY's before I start a mod. But no offense, this search function is severly lacking...I tend to go to google and do the search and it will find the thread for me on NAM better then the NAM search function!.

Anyway, we need some sort of DIY compialation stickied to the top of this thread as well as copies stickied in all the modification sub-section threads. Obviously the best DIY's should be the ones in the thread, the ones with detail and pictures, etc.

I'll be looking for these threads but I know many of you have already looked at several of them, I'm new to the MINI world so I'm not sure of all the DIY's that may be out there. Currently I'm working on a DIY to de-chrome the tail-lights.

Alright, thanks fellow Motorers!

Try searching for "DIY"
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...archid=4207681

Search for "blackout tail lights"
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...archid=4207915

From outmotoring.com
http://www.outmotoring.com/pages.php?pageid=3

And from Motoringflie.com
http://www.motoringfile.com/diy/

Many lack pictures due to being left over from an older server.

I've always felt NAM was just one big DIY forum.

Try the NAM search extension for Firefox.

Or roll your own.

You do use Firefox, right?

And I do agree. I'd like to have a place to go for R53 DIY projects, vice R56.

I agree completely. Searching on NAM can be difficult and frustrating. It's like the early days of Internet search before Google, when everybody used Yahoo and it mostly returned everything you didn't want.

For DIY, NAM needs something similar to this site: http://www.e38.org/

I'm sorry, but by the time Yahoo came about as a search engine, the "early days of internet search" were already well in the past.

I remember in 1990 having to telnet into an Archie server, logging into the server, submitting my search to the Archie program (in the form of a UNIX command string), and then using FTP to retrieve the file from whatever server was hosting it (after telnetting into THAT server and hoping it would accept "anonymous" logins).

Archie (and later, Veronica and Jughead) weren't the most sophisticated search engines, but when there were only a few hundred servers on the internet, it didn't really matter - there simply wasn't as much stuff to slog through. In fact, for almost the first twenty years of the internet, there really was no comprehensive search ability at all - you found out where stuff was either by word-of-mouth, or by logging into servers anonymously and poking around the public directories looking for interesting stuff.

I always thought this was a great way of doing things. They have this thread stickied...and it contains DIY's FAQ's and other things that relate to the car that the section is about. It helps by giving people an easy library to search through for common mods. All it really is is links to the threads....I envision linking to threads like "will this void warranty" "how to blackout the beltline" "what pulley is best" "how to install springs" "what does r56 mean?" "how do i change the oil"

They update it as good DIY threads pop up. Generally someone will post a helpful DIY thread and a few people will post saying "thanks! put this in the sticky" They simply add it and the list grows.

and yah, the NAM search is garbage. After you sift through a bunch of OT threads and a few completely unrelated topics, you might be able to find a thread that mentions your search phrase once somewhere in the thread.
