Firefox Extension for searching NAM
Firefox Extension for searching NAM
Has anyone written one yet?
I get the concept of how to do it, but really, really don't want to go through the learning curve to do it.
Please tell me that someone has already done it. Please, pretty please....

I wrote one, it's a search plug in.

Davy,
I added the plug-in to my copy of Firefox (although the procedure was obviously different for my Macintosh).
Now that it's installed, how is it used/activated/run? Does it add a menu item in one of the drop-down menus? I haven't found anything different since installing it, but I'm probably not looking in the right place.
Thanks!

Hey guys
It adds a managed search provider, like google, to your search bar at the top right. You need to restart ff for it to show.
BTW, this may be a 2.0 specific provider I'm afraid.

Thanks - it's not showing up using FF 2.0 on Mac OS X, even after a re-start. The plug-in shows up as being installed, but I still have the default managed engines for the search window.
I'm trying to find out now whether or not there's a different procedure for installing *search* plug-ins on the Mac.
Thanks again,

Thanks again,
riquiscott, I got it to work.
For OS X, it needs to go into the extension folder in your user library:
User/Library/Application Support/Firefox/profiles/something/extensions
Or something close to that. I'm actually using Bon Echo, a G4/G5 optmized variant of Firefox. But the idea should be the same.
I got the details from here.
David, this is awesome. Thank you. Exactly the kind of tool I was looking for. It's using NAM's internal search engine, right?
Do you think using something like Google and site:northamericanmotoring.com produce different results, given that signatures are stored seperately in the SQL? I'll need to tinker some, to see if the NAM engine picks up signature blocks -- how many people list Alta 15% in their signature blocks?
Every NAM user should use this.

It's funny - installing this won't save me any time or clicks versus just going the the NAM homepage and using the search window there, but at this point, I just want to figure out what I'm doing wrong!
This saves me a bunh of clicks. Apple-T or CRTL-T and I get a new tab, and then I drop my search into the search window, and bam, I've got answers.
OS X and XP friendly.
For XP, it installed here:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\hl9eeuwc.default\sea rchplugins
It is easily worth 10 times what I paid for it.

Thanks - I'm obviously still doing something wrong. I put it in the extensions folder like you suggested, and then re-started FF, but it's not showing up as one of the available search engines under the search manager. Do I have to rename the extension to something other than "searchnam.xml"?

I extracted it straight into C:\Documents and Settings\rossag\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\au3dqdv9.default\sea rchplugins
After restarting FF, it still wasn't showing up. I upgraded from 1.5 to 2.0 of Firefox and it worked straight away.

On the Firefox installation on my Mac, I don't have a "searchplugins" folder, just an "extensions" folder under Library/Application Support/Firefox. Even after re-installing Firefox 2.0, I can't get it to work. I'm not too worried about it any more, just curious.
Hey hey... can't we all get along??
Here is what I did - Click on the Manage Search Engines menu item (in the search bar) then click on the Get more search engines link. Add a new search plug in from the list (for instance BBC News). That will create a directory for you in your Firefox profile directory ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/somestring.default/searchplugins and maybe touch some other preference file or set something up.
Then drop the NAM search xml file to this directory, restart FF2 -- and you're all set.
I made an old search plug in but it stopped working with FF2
This one works great! Thanks davydo

Thanks, Paul!! That was the issue - the "searchplugins" folder isn't created as part of the default Firefox install. As soon as I used "Search Manager" to add another search engine, (I chose IMDB, since I'm always there) the folder was installed and activated, and the searchnam.xml works great now.
Thanks so much for the help.
