Well, we have a lot of street racers and people who have brought negative attention to mods (ie super loud exhausts, blinding modded lights ,etc ) so I'm not surprised. I'm not concerned as long as they only target illegal stuff like that either, I just hope the dummies who street race don't ruin our ability to mod at all.

Everyone should be more worried about the black boxes in all of the cars recording everything we do more then that..

But what exactly is illegal in CA? Sounds like Nitro but Ignitions? Whats with that? Air Intakes ... CAI? Does that make, for example Alta illegal? He also pointed out headers .... no no and loud exhausts.

You all might have a different problem than other parts of the country but, for example, I looked up the law in my state and it explicitly states that ALL aftermarket exhausts that are "louder" than stock are Illegal Now whether thats enforced or not is another issue.

Well, I found that most things are spelled out in the vehicle codes one can find via the State gov site - so if there is a certain modification someone wants to do they can check out any limitations for their location. On the CA gov site they also have this now which describes many things (but not certain details, like how a front plate can be mounted anywhere as long as it is within certain measurements): http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/streetlegal.html. So that will give you an idea of things then you can go into the vehicle code text to really see what is specified in detail that might not be listed there.

Some black box info fwiw:

Any mod that can effect emissions..

that doesn't have a CARB sticker is illegal. Not sure about the cat-backs though.

Alta CAIs are no-nos, as are the new Webb CAI, and pretty much any except the K&N and JCW.

In CA, go stealthy, keep the stock look, or find CARB approved stuff.

Or keep all your stock stuff, and if you get cought, go back to stock for inspection (And this equals time and hassle).

I don't mind this that much, you can get 50 state legal (CA included) blower systems for Mustangs etc. The problem with the Mini is it's small market, so most manufacturers don't do the CARB certification hassle.

And street racers are a real problems, and the law has found a back-door way to hunt them down. Sucks for most of us, that's for sure.

Oh dang. I'm glad Florida doesn't have crap like that (we don't even have emission tests anymore ). I'd be stock forever

Its not. Its really a waste of time that I cant even describe.

So are there any states besides CA that have this sort of enforcement? I realize that there are laws everywhere, but I only here about CA being strict and enforcing, etc.

i think those cops are more interested in getting ric0rs off the streets
than tastefully modded cars.

Actually it is not very strictly enforced at all, I see lots of cars and trucks breaking those laws right in front of cops all of the time and not get pulled over. Like speeding or any other infractions I think a combination of factors come into play to get people in trouble, it could be something they do that gets the attention, a bad day for the officer (or a quota they have to fill) but overall it's not the military state its made out to be.

I agree with eVal on this from living in the Bay Area my whole life, its usaully not a big issue. But in some places, like Oakland, where side shows and street racing have become an issue with pedestrian deaths, they are starting to crack down. The main thing is not to draw attention to yourself, and be smart about where you decide to stand on the gas.
