Goin' to CSU Monterey Bay!!!

Just like the title says, I'm off to CSUMB next fall. I'm graduating this year, and can't WAIT to be off to college. I'm just wondering... how many MINI's am I going to see driving the streets of Monterey and Seaside? I can't wait to be closer to SF [I'm currently about 4 hours south] and the rest of the big[ger] cities.

yup... me and [hopefully... if they allow first years to have cars] Deja... my '05 Electric Blue MCS... will be tearin' up the streets of Seaside in late August. [legally, of course]

so... who'm I going to be seeing around? anyone else attending CSUMB? I'm heading up on the 9th [April] to check out the campus and surrounding area. anyone wanna show me around a bit... maybe a couple close twisties? [I already know H1. done it before]

Anyways, can't wait to see more MINIs!

A little confused by this. When did schools start telling theirs students whether they can drive or not?

Don't know when, but most of the schools in the UC division don't allow first or second years to have cars. I don't know why... maybe something about sticking to academics... or some weird reason like that. Anyways, I hope they allow it... I am totally looking forward to actually GOING to a couple of the Norcal MINI meets. I payed my dues, I wanna meet people!

When did they change this? I am a CSUN alumni. We had no such restrictions. But than again, that was 20+ years ago.

You will see a few MINI's your way, and alot more making their runs on the coastal highways!

Good luck to you and your studies CSUMB is a great campus, and if Auto Xing starts back up in Marina, you can AutoX right next door! From what I know is there are no restrictions on driving to school, but they may restrict parking permits...

A lot of schools these days restrict at least first-year students from bringing car. Ostensibly they do it so that kids spend more time on campus and get to know the school and their peers (draconian, I know), but it's usually really because they don't have enough parking and this is one quick and simple way to alleviate it a bit.

Sadly, there are a lot of things in college (at least these days, don't know if it was true in the past) where the school uses some benign-sounding reason regarding campus unity or some other such thing to impose annoying restrictions on students. Another example of this would be that at my school, students are led to believe it's too expensive to live off campus, and so there's an overwhelming mentality that it's not feasible to live off campus, thus around 98% of students live on campus, and then the school requires that kids in every dorm (except for one) pay for a meal plan costing between $4,000-$4,400/year. Most kids seem to go along with it.

Cute, eh?

Autocrossing is going on regularly at Marina. For one, the Golden Gate Chapter of the BMWCCA (www.ggcbmwcca.org) is having monthly autocrosses there, the next one being on April 17.

Not only in California - my son went to University of Washington, Seattle, for his freshman year and they also discouraged freshman, and even sophomores, from driving to school.
