Hmmm... interesting... I look forward to hearing if there's anything more than the speed.
The one bug I hate that was actually INTRODUCED with one of the last few updates... when you look up something in the Information directory, it fails to show & display the actual number of the address (after you retrieve it from the database). It only shows the city & street! I think it still takes you to the correct number, but it irks me that it doesn't appear to load the house number.
I hope they fixed that with V28.
EDIT: Nope, same problem is still there with V28. Bummer.

Finally
installed it myself (my car was at the dealership for the last 3 days) can't tell any difference really.

The official PDF file for V28 has been posted on x5world: http://x5world.com/pdf/v28.pdf
It says "There are no new features relevant for US vehicles on Navigation SW V28". It looks like the release was to fix a motorised display flap issue on BMW E83, E85, and E86 vehicles.

Well I did the GB voice hack this morning and uploaded the file. Nobody did it last time and I was dissapointed. So I had to look up the directions on how to do it myself and then post it for everyone to have. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G2LEDUZ6
Not responsible, bla bla bla... do at your own risk, yadda yadda yadda... Enjoy!

I have an 05 build MCS with NAV and have noticed that A LOT of the directions my navigation gives me are just plain wrong. Especially in Texas, when I get outside of the city limits, my NAV just completely looses my position. If I were to install one of these updates, would that solve this problem, or would have to go to the dealership and pay for the upgrade CDs?
skitelluride,
My '06 (Sept 05 build) came with Nav version 25 installed. The subsequent updates have given improved graphics, auto-dismiss of the nag screen, 3D perspective view (cool looking but I don't find it useful), and reportedly faster processing of satellite positioning (I can't verify this). I think it's worthwhile to update even if it doesn't solve your problems.
Which year release of NavTeq map disc do you have (eject the disc and look on the label)? If you have a very old map disc, a new one might possibly help. Honestly though I doubt that the route directions will improve.

Now with the v28 and the newest 2007.1 DVD the nav continues to improve with fast operation and accurate movement.
To download the newest update (without hacked GB voice) check it out @ my blog:

Thanks, omascow!! Your download, unzip, burn and firmware upgrade all worked flawlessly for me, and the British Female continues to patiently tell me where to go on my upgraded system.
Thanks for your time,

mdsbrain - may I suggest you grab a copy and put it on your site too? I know that a lot of requests come through for this, and now that someone's done it, and for V28 no less, it seems a valuable download to have close-by.
omascow deserves much praise. I (luckily) don't need a modified copy myself, but I'm very happy to know that nobody has to miss out now.
The "hacked" version is basically the USA voice option, but the GB voice files were set to replace the original USA voice files, so the Nav "thinks" you are using the USA voice, but it sounds GB. Check your settings menu... cars that have both (newer ones, like mine) will actually show both USA & GB as choices on the menu.

NOTE: All posts regarding illegal methods of obtaining the map disc will be deleted. The Nav OS updates are legal to copy, the map discs aren't.
If you are already running v27.1, there is really no compelling reason to install v28. See my post #9 in this thread.
Thanks. I'll just wait until a more compelling upgrade. Oh Mine is an 06 MCSa, took delivery in June, so It came with the GB option. I've not installed any upgrades to the NAV yet.
I think I found a visible difference with V28! It's TINY, totally irrelevant... but it's there:
After you search for something in the information database, the icons appear on the map pointing out all items in the same category.
In the older versions (pre-V28), the option to remove the icons was called "Disable icons". Now, with V28, the option is called "Hide icons".
There - a difference.
Personally, even though I had V27.1, I updated anyway. I always like to have the latest... there may be other small improvements that are not documented in the PDF too.

Personally, I could give a hoot about the distribution of either the map updates or the OS updates, but it boggles my mind when folks try to justify one being okay to copy and not the other (simply because one cost money directly whereas the other does not, etc.).
Please note that I'm not trying to single you or anyone else out specifically here, I simply want folks to know that it is indeed just as illegal to make copies of the nav update CD's as it is the map update CD's/DVD's (so don't try and fool yourselves). It's your conscience and so you're the one who has to decide if you feel okay doing it or not. If you don't mind, then go for it. Just be sure you know the truth is all.
Personally, I feel that if you're going to allow one to take place, then you should allow the other as well (or visa versa).
I guess that we're just lucky that VDO/BMW don't seem to mind the updates being distributed on the Internet is all.
Just my $0.02...
Hmm - I hadn't though about it that way before.
Yes, but you also aren't exposing yourself to risk in this - Mark Ferguson is though! As a Moderator I have to act based upon the continued best interests of NAM community - and that especially includes reducing risk of lawsuit (and possible shutdown). You may think that's a stretch, but this is the land of the lawsuits, and why take the chance?
I suspect that's the basis of my (and many others) opinion on this. The OS updates are simply not available for sale, however any dealer who is willing to risk the liability (in case something goes wrong) can install these updates without charging the customer (except for labor). The fact that the NavOS updates are available from various websites, and that I have yet to hear of any of them being shut down... so with both of those reasons, there's a feeling of implicit permission to distribute it.
However, copying the map discs are a far more blatant "cheating" of income from the company that makes them (NAVTEQ).
I disagree. I still feel there is a distinct difference.
I agree! Perhaps their copyright is primarily intended to prevent competitors from stealing their code and ideas?

Just a stupid question that I haven't yet found the definitive answer to (unless I missed it)... my current nav shows version "4/71". Is this version 27.1 of the Nav software? If so, what will the upgrade to v28 show - "4/80" ?
Thanks!
Thanks!
