On Garmin GPS units, the ring around the car marker (i.e. the triangle in the MINI's case) represents the accuracy of the GPS system. Simply put, the car can be anywhere within the circle depending upon the accuracy of the current satellite lock. That's the way I think of it on my MINI as well.

hmm

Is there a way to automatically recalculate the position? Like a reset? I swear ever since my NAV got flashed to removed the nag screen its off by 10 to 20 yards.

Basically, ignore the circle for the most part and pay attention to the point of the triangle - unless of course your car has miscalculated your position.

Oops, I meant yards, not feet. I find that sometimes it's off, and it corrects itself when you move a bit more. I don't think there's anything you can do but move the car. I haven't done ANY "trick flashing" to change anything (I still have the nag screen), and sometimes it's off too!

Yea, Richard. I actually drove around yesterday with route list on to compare. I almost always drive split=screen and the route list updates just as slowly. I thought t might be a redraw issue, but the map (I think) now scrolls and updates much faster. It was finding my new route that was slower and this didn't matter whether I was waiting for the right side of the split screen to update or the route list.

Is the update worth it?

First let me state that this is a very poorly designed navigation system. My wife has a Toyota Camry with Nav and it is far superior.

Second, is it worth the effort to update the Nav system (2005 MCS)? Is it just the graphics in the new version? Will i loose my "Mini symbol screen" when i start the car? Are there any functional changes?

Third, when i input an address i get the arrow and verbal directions, to get the map i need to input "map". Can you set it so that it defaults to the map with verbal directions? Can u have the map with directions without the voice? I appreciate the temperature in the lower left but the mileage or time to destination would be more helpful.

Berky,

I agree completely...the graphics and programming ability is poor beyond belief compared with most other systems.

You should upgrade....mine is a late model '05 and the improvement is huge. No longer looks like a '80's video game. (Now it's more like a '90's video game).

You do keep the Mini graphic (whew!)

Use the split screen rather than full screen, then you will have all verbal direction, map and arrow.

You might change your mind a bit after this software update. As for getting familar with the interface, it's not bad once you get the hang of it. For a single button design, it's pretty damn good, if you ask me. The only "extra" button is the MENU button, which was necessary to be able to switch to other views (Computer, Settings, "Emergency"... and others if you add on to the system (like TV/Video or Telephone)).

Is it worth it? One word. YES. There are a number of changes, but the graphics are the most significant. Someone posted a list of known changes earlier in this thread - go back and check it. You don't lose the MINI logo on startup, so don't worry.

You need to go into your options (MENU, then Set) and change your view to "split screen", as francisk said. After that, it will "default to the map with verbal directions, and ALSO show you the arrows, distance to next turn, mileage AND time to destination, etc. Yes, you can turn off the voice. Just hit the main button to bring up the context menu. It should have defaulted to the second option, regarding directions. You'll notice a little speaker icon on the right side of it. Push and HOLD the button in, while that option is selected. The speaker icon will change to show a red line through it. That turns off the voice prompts. Let go of the button, then wait a few seconds after that and the menu will disappear.

Word to the wise on that... it may not be "officially" released and available in the USA dealers yet. Those of us with it have downloaded the update CD and installed it ourselves. I've done the update 4 times now without issues (V23 -> V24 -> V24.1 -> V25 -> V26), but if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself (or you don't have someone else local who can help), you may have to wait until MINIUSA plays catchup.

Yes, and seeing how slow MINI USA seems to work... This will most likely be when pigs begin to fly.

So is there any real way to get rid of the "nag screen"?

Sure there is, but it comes with some tradeoffs...

If you downgrade and then upgrade your nav system (e.g. downgrade from v25 to v24 and then upgrade v24 to v26, etc.), this will put the unit into a "no location" mode. This results in the removal of the "Accept" screen, but also switches the unit over to using yards instead of feet when routing (and may also through off your gas milage reports a bit since it may use an Imperial gallon instead of a U.S. gallon for the calculations - I dunno for sure though). You will also gain the cool "Route Magnet" feature which is kind of like a "via" point that can be used when routing.

NOW!!! The bad thing is that if you decide that you don't like it and want to go back to the way that it was before. ONLY a delaer can reprogram the nav computer for you (and that can be expensive).

Would there be anyone that I could beg, borrow, or buy the Disk you have made for an '05. And with the British voice. Some of us are too old to understand what you guys are doing, much less do it, but sure would like the results..

PM me please if you can help an old geezer:impatient

Hi all,

If anyone is having trouble downloading the original V26 update file from X5World, here's an alternative download location that's been setup just for MINI owners:

v26.rar

I 100% guaranty that it is the original (un-voice-hacked) version of the V26 update that came from X5World. I've installed it on no less than five MINIs so far and I've had absolutely no problems with it whatsoever.

A big thanks goes out to fellow MINI owner David for hosting the file for all of us other MINI owners.

The file will be available for a limited time only!

-- MIKE

I tried the route list today

This would be great if it showed which way to turn on that screen also, but just the name of the road and mileage isn't very helpful. On my friends accord his route list gives, name of road to turn on, which way and how far away.

so just to throw a different spin on all of this...

i called my dealer and they got the update. i am going in tomorrow to have it installed. what's interesting is that they told me the nav system gets reset when they do it and involves a little more than just popping in a disc. i trust them as they are doing all of my jcw work thus far and in the future and have been really stand-up guys with me.

i'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

cheers - drew

Perhaps you can watch them or ask them to explain the process if you have a good relationship with them - the disk seems to reset the system as part of the setup and if I recall correctly it is all they did to install new nav software on my bimmer in the past.

well

Its not a complete reset, it doesn't wipe your address but it wipes your information you had previously listed.

Funny. I just popped in the disc. Address book, etc, is fine. Sounds like typical dealer "no servicable parts inside" crap to me.

Oh, I think you do have to do more than pop in the disc...you have to "Press to continue" at one point. The installer is pretty good at prompting.

Let us know what they really do.

S.

My 2005 MCSDT is at the shop getting some 'adjustments' made. One of these was the failure of the NAV voice. I asked my SA if they would flash the NAV computer if they had V26. (This was Monday). He called to tell me that they did not yet have the update, so I was going to bring my copy and do it when I picked up today (Wednesday) since he'd not seen one flashed previously. I had done a couple of these on my 2004 MCS. Yesterday (Tuesday) he called to give me an update on some of the other work, advise that the NAV was on speaking terms once again (a wire had to be reconnected...) AND that the BMW service center had received the V26 update that morning, so they were flashing it for me.

Looks like it is generally available to the dealer network as of this week.

Thanks to Jason I got mine done yesterday. The two things I love the most:

The map moves instead of the 'car' icon
Map position goes travel direction in a higher scale

Oh, and the chekered flag is pretty cool....

THANKS!!!!!!!!!
