Radio just died!!

Hiya all -

Well, I was drivin' to work this morning listening to the radio ('W' was on saying everything was gonna be just fine down in N.O. ), and the radio just quit. Stopped working. Won't turn on. Nada. Nothin'.

Anyone else have this happen? I'm thinking it must be a fuse?...which I'm check when I get homw. I thought I'd see if anyone else has had this problem before I call the dealer.

Of course, my wife and I are expecting our first baby (today, Friday the 2nd is actually Caroline's due date!!), so I'm gonna be a bit busy reeeal soon, so I'm reluctant to make a dealer appointment.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers - and long live New Orleans!!!!!

Radio just died!

Was leaving the dealership yesterday after a service and my radio and trunk mount changer would not play. The head display was still working and the controls still worked but no sound. As it turned out the H/K amp in the boot died. There had not been any problems with the radio or changer before yesterday.

According to the tech. the radios allways crap out after an air filter change!! Ha Ha.

They changed the amp (no charge) and commented that tha H/K amps die with no warning. Good luck with your problem, maybe it will be easy like mine.

Hope this helps...

kazlot -

Thanks - but I have the stock HU w/iPod adapter and have had the iPod adapter in place for 6 months or so. I haven't had the air filter changed for several months ...wierd.

I get display on the HU at all. It won't even power up, but all the other electrical items on the center console are working fine (so it's probably NOT a fuse since I doubt the HU has a fuse all to itself).

Figures... the car is 5,000 miles out of warranty! I guess if the HU took a dump, this might be a good time to get a better one (as long as it works with my iPod adapter).

Thanks again - - m

I don't know about that - a lot of stereos I've seen have an inline fuse all their own - but that might have changes over the years - I'm an old fart, after all. . .

Hmmm....Then would the fuse actually be IN the radio, or in the fuse panel?

Cheers - - m

The aftermarket units I used to install (years ago) had the fuse actually in the power lead in a twist apart holder. I can't imagine MINI doing that today, but being British, well, ya never know. . .

Anyone have a MINI schematic? That would show if there's a separate fuse for the tunes (which I think is very possible).

Then again, you said you were listeinig to Dubya on the radio? Maybe you got one of those HK units - you know, the "Hail Kerry" models? That would explain the cutting out. . .

Ya' know, it's funny, but that was my first guess... It was MY RADIO being so pissed off with all the bullsh*t that was going on in new orleans, that it just couldn't stand to listen to that bas**rd continue to shovel propaganda at us any more. So it committed suicide.

As far as the radio/fuse question - I have the bentley shop manual, and the radio is one of the components on the "k-bus" curcuit. It isn't shown with an internal fuse (of course, I'd have to be able to see the radio manufacturer's schematic - which I don't have with the stock HU). I did check the fuse (#27) in the fuse box, just next to the driver's side left foot. The fuse was fine and not blown, so I'm thinking that maybe the stock HU either just died - or the connection harness wasn't put on properly when I had my iPod adapter install about 7 months ago?

Either way - I guess it's a trip to the dealer for me. I just don't have the time to pull the radio...my wife is 4 days past her due date and about to go POP!!! ... and it could happen at any time.

Thanks for your input tho' - - Michael

Good luck with the "POP," pop - and let us know A) How the baby birthin' goes, and B) what the final diagnosis is on the radio.

My radio's fine, but I give it dose of Debussy every so often to clear out the system. Seems to help.

Sounds like a trip to the dealer...might be a nice diversion after the little one arrives and y'all get adjusted (whatever that is?!?!?!).

Best wishes to you, the wifey, and your little angel.

Good luck with fixing your radio.

If you need a new one, I'm about to list my 2004 MCS stock CD/radio on Ebay that was removed two weeks after taking delivery of the car.

PM me if you are interested.

Thanks, everyone - Sorry for the delay in my response.

As an update:

1.) Julia Maya Hood Burchill was born on Sept. 12th at 1:51am, and weighted in at 8lb. 8.6oz. ...Both Mom and Julia are at home and doing fine

2.) Brought the Winston to the dealer for a radio fix. They informed me the radio was defective, and replaced the unit free of charge. As I was driving home later that day - about 10 minutes from the dealer - the *new* radio just stopped working. Don't think we're looking at two defective radios. So, now I'm scheduled to bring it in again this Friday for another attempt at a fix.

Personally, I think we're looking at a short in the K-Bus circuit, or a problem with the wiring harness around pin #13. Or it might be a power problem causing the fuse on the back of the unit to blow out.

Whatever it is, it seems kinda strange to me.... I've never had a problem with a *radio* in any car I've evr bought before.
