Aftermarket android head unit
After a bit over a month I finally installed a backup cam and that works great. Really excited about the end result.
I will admit I'm disappointed no one can get the tpms working properly but in reality I lived without on on other cars. And have heard you can use an app on your phone like torque Pro. I can confirm the warnings still work for oil and tire pressure.
Every once in a while the head unit can be a bit buggy but have to remind myself that before this I had the really shitty base unit with no bluetooth for music and had to use a really terrible aux bluetooth that would disconnect all the time.
Also I spent 400 on this rather than several thousand for a stock nav that I really dont like.
I mostly use waze and the Sirius xm app and have no issues really.
Now with the backup cam I can park without worrying about scuffing my bumper getting into really small spots. Also with my back window tinted pretty dark I was going blind at night.
The backup cam cost 40$ on Amazon and looks OEM from outside. I poked a small hole for wiring in the little plastic cover above the rear plate. And if I had to get rid of it I could buy the piece cheaply and replace it.
If anyone has questions let me know but for the money if you have the screen it's crazy not to use this feature.
I would do this again if I'm being honest. Its not perfect I might try a different vendor and I'm a little disappointed but really this is better than stock just not as good as it could be. If anyone is on the fence about it. I still think it's worth the hassle.

I took my car into the dealership for some work and they asked me to show them how to reset the service warnings and such which I was able to do. Otherwise they said it was fine and would t effect anything. I didn't ask but it didn't seem like it was the first time they had seen this .
The only reason I ask is because I see this kit on ebay. Similar to the module I had which mine only support front and rear cameras. This one does that plus has android auto and car play. Just a plug in module as well. Thinking about going back to my original and put this on.

That's what happened with me. And the fact that the Alibaba rep took the seller's side was a horrible experience.

Wait what headunit did you have before all this? I had the basic one with no screen that adapter on Ebay is only for the mini unit with the 6 inch screen to give it android auto.
I had the 6 inch, no touch screen, no gps. I wanted something where I can use waze, play spotify, and YouTube for the kids. So I thought that china unit would be a good fit. With android auto and apple car play or phone mirroring, I can have all that.
so, being an apple guy... Is this doable?
What's up with the wired apple play connection?
My 2014 f56 base only have 2 speakers (door) & under seat bass/subs... is it possible to add rear speakers? Referring to connections... I know they can be added.
My wife got me speakers shortly after I bought my Mini - pass door speaker was damaged/blown. She bought BavSound door speakers (pair)... after that, I replaced the floor speakers.
From the base head unit (very under powered), was there a noticeable change in volume or depth in bass?

I was also thinking of buying one of these third party units to replace the prehistoric stock display. It seems like it could be a good option if the software is stable in CarPlay mode. I read the whole thread and saw the issues with TPMS and oil level checking. Are there any viable workarounds for either of these issues and does anyone have any more information to share? It's very difficult to find any information on these things online because they are specialized and there are many solutions based on what options your car is equipped with.
The only other cost effective solution in my mind is a standalone CarPlay compatible display and dealing with the wire spaghetti, mounting hassles, and lack of physical buttons. These options will end up being more or less the same price after finding a mounting solution that doesn't require blocking the windshield, drilling holes in the dashboard or obstructing something.
