Navigation & Audio Installing a CB Radio
Installing a CB Radio
Okay, I am sure you are asking yourself, "who the hell uses a CB radio anymore?" Well both my folks (mom and step dad) were long haul truckers and I learned that NOTHING is a better tool for long trips for staying out of trouble than a CB radio (just got my first speeding ticket last week with the new car
)
That said, I wanted to ping the community and see if anyone has installed one. I am thinking of giving it a shot, using the AUX in. Something small that I can put in the hidden glovebox.
Given that I have a vert, I am thinking of having a "mount" made that goes in the rear tow hook hole. This would not be a "always on" thing, but something I could plug in for my long trips.
So I open this idea up to my buds here. Thoughts?

I thought about it but then I realized how big a cobra 29 was in a MINI. I have had trucks before and always found space for it. My road trips have lessened on the last years and dropped the idea. Most folks on there just talk a bunch or crap or nasty things about females.
Back to helping...The rear tow hook could work with a flat mount and a magnetic base or a threaded ant. I think you could try to remove the inside of the secret compartment and get some more room, but not too sure if that is a reality or how it is assembled.
The coax wouldn't be fun to run unless you plan on making your own. The larger connectors will not pass though a ton of places. Are you comfortable with making a cable and soldering the ends on after running the wire?

Found this thread, looks like a few have accomplished it:

A few threads..
cobra 19iv fits fine in a gen1. Used an anteana attatched to the towhook...works fine, not great. Just use the built in speaker, no aux in.....cb's are getting kinda quiet. Some have remoute mount options, with controls on the mic.

Thank you for the advice, I am glad to see I am not the only one looking to do this.
Yah I want to find a unit that has a aux out, so I can use the cars speakers, as I said, I really want this tool on long trips, so it would be something I install when I am packing up the car...
I am not sure how grounded the tow hook is, but I can get a custom made mount.
In my beetle it was easy, I just popped the mag on the roof and go. Truckers use to get a kick out of a bright yellow beetle with "ears"

While not on our MCS, I do have a mobile ham radio installed in my Challenger (same concept as CB, just need a license and can transmit much further). The way I have it hooked up is the unit can actually split (main unit is in the trunk sharing space with the spare tire and battery) with the wires running through the trim to the head unit and microphone. The head unit is mounted on a suction cup to the windshield (with a branch that puts it just in front of the dash). The microphone is kept in the "coin indentation" under the radio (easily within reach and stays out of the way of the gear shift). The audio is sent into the aux-in on the radio. Antenna is attached to the trunk with a trunk mount (see http://www.universal-radio.com/catal...ntm/diamx.html for examples) -- this helps protect your paint job and prevents people from knocking the mount off the car.
I can understand ryou reason for having one just not the AUX portion of what you are trying to do.
Long ago when i owned VW Micro Bus (Westfalia Camper Edition) I had a 102" whip mounted on each side. and two different CBs so I could be on two channels at the same time.

have you seen the midland 75-822? It can be used both handheld with battery or powered by the 12v port. It can hook to an external antennae. It has a jack for external speaker, or to your aux port. I am actually thinking of getting one so I can jump from hand held in the mini to powered and external antennae in my truck. It also has a multitude of antennas to chose from
