My 2007 MCS bluetooth has just stopped working. It no longer transmits a signal so the phone can see the mini in the bluetooth menu. My iPhone 4 has been working perfectly for over a year and then it just quit. I went to the dealer and we tested both my phone (on another MINI) and it recognized that one right away. We also tested several other phones and none were able to see my MINI. My MINI has stopped transmitting a bluetooth signature and the dealer said that they have no fix for this? I asked what they would do if the car was in warranty and they said they would replace the electronics.
Does anyone know of a way to reset the bluetooth?

 

Back in 07 there were threads here about the bluetooth module becoming full from repeated phonebook downloads and becoming fried. Not sure what happened with that.

Doubtful that it is a overload problem as that only happened with a few certain phones and the iPhone was not one of them. And if that was the case it would have failed alot sooner

Now as for the dealer stating "there is nothing we can do" that is total BS as all they have to do is replace the Bluetooth Module. Easy as that.

Now as to whether you want to pay that kind of money is another question. It will probably run you over $1K to have it fixed.

Another cheaper option is to have a Parrot Bluetooth unit installed. They can be made to work with you steering wheel controls and play thru the radio just as your OEM did. The only difference will be that the contacts will not be on the screen in the speedo they will be on another screen that is dedicated to the Parrot system.

 

The dealer should be able to reset the Bluetooth module. They should also test the module with BMW's Service Software before concluding that a new electronics module is needed. It may very well be the Bluetooth antenna, which is not integral to the module. I am certain BMW must have a test plan in place to find the fault.

If you are certain you need a new MULF, then you may find good deals on the internet instead of going to the dealer. Since you have the cabling in place, changin the module shouldnt be much of a hassle. But you may need to code it later...

 

Oh Yes I forgot... You may want to try to remove the fuse for the MULF and headunit and so force a restart, but I doubt it will help.

 

Shouldn't need to code the replacement ULF if it is a used module. Mine didn't require it.

ISTA/P doesn't offer any way to reset the ULF as far as I know, maybe a software update (as long as one is available) could fix it.

 

How much did the replacement ULF cost. How hard was it to replace? Any instructions for this on the forum?

For me, I actually added the bluetooth system to my car. I really lucked out and got the module on ebay for $50. There is one right now listed for about $314 on ebay (270843532503). It is located under the driver seat, so you have to remove the seat and module itself has just a MOST bus fiber optic connector and a harness plug. Not too difficult if you have the right tools to get the seat out. Something like a T40 or T50 is needed.
