Navigation & Audio iPod/iPhone Aux In + Charge
iPod/iPhone Aux In + Charge
I have a 2006 JCW. Ideally I would like an adaptor that has a dock cable that plugs into my iPhone and pipes the audio through the stereo while charging the phone.
I think this does what I want but I am concerned about the quality
EBAY Input Module
I could get one of these
Mini Aux In
But then I would have to buy a Kensington 2-in-1 cable and a separate power supply which seems unnecessarily complicated and messy.
Has anybody tried an adaptor from iPod World Wide (ipod-world-wide)? Does anyone know of a similar solution from a more well known source?
Thanks,
Rupert

I use the MINI Aux In like you link and one of these. It works flawlessly and it uses the digital audio out signal not the analog out coming from the headphone jack. It is pretty much the same size as the Apple factory dock connector which is great for use with a case.

You use the Aux In level adjustment through the stereo for line level amplification and you are good to go! Oh yeah, you can charge at the same time.

This link will take you to my new wireless streaming and phone connectivity solution I installed a couple months ago and love. I still use the method mentioned above to charge and I can switch back and forth if I need to for listening to audio.

I've been using the Griffin AutoPilot for several years, and it works very well. A single cable to the iPod/iPhone connects it to power and audio: http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-AutoPi.../dp/B003SX0O34. Use it in combination with the OEM Aux Input jack (which is exactly what Moss Mini is selling in your second link).
The DICE interface is popular and well regarded. It integrates with the steering wheel buttons and radio display: http://www.europeanautosource.com/pr...oducts_id=3808. There's a version that also adds Bluetooth capability: http://www.europeanautosource.com/pr...oducts_id=3551. I would be using one of those except that they are incompatible with the factory Nav.
That's not a digital audio signal (there is none on iPod/iPhone, for copy protection reasons). It's an analog line-out signal, but it's noticeably higher quality than the headphone jack because it bypasses the headphone amplifier.

I use the Tom-Tom car kit for iPhone and have been very happy with it although it still requires the Aux In adapter listed in the OPs post. Although it is not cheap it does provide all the functionality I wanted.
• No cables to fumble around with. Just snap your iPhone into the dock.
• Charges the iPhone.
• Plays music through your car stereo via the iPhone line level out.
• Has a much stronger GPS built in for any GPS software (I use Navigon).
• Mutes the music for turn by turn directions or phone calls.
• Has a passable bluetooth hands free phone built in (mike and speaker).
The Tom Tom car kit and mounting bracket together are $150 from ProClip and put the iPhone in a perfect position for GPS / iPhone use. The GPS is every bit as good as a stand alone unit and you will never miss an instruction when listening to your iPod at louder levels.

BTW, Magellan also has a very similar product. If you wanted to skip the MINI specific mount either is available with a suction cup mount at Best Buy and the Tom Tom can be had for $90.
( just checked and the Tom Tom is on sale this week at Best Buy for $63 )

Thanks everyone.
This website seems to been down a lot so I did not see these posts until now. I ordered the Aux in kit and one of these today
Kensington 2-in-1 Charger and Audio Cable
I have always thought the TomTom car kit looked like a good solution and it is tempting at that price.
Isuldor do you think the GPS booster is helpful? Which ProClip do you use? Is it mounted to the right of the radio (does not seem ideal for GPS)? Do you have any pictures?
Thanks

The GPS booster is definitely head and shoulders above the iPhone's built in GPS. I use the Navigon app and it displays a GPS accuracy warning of about 10 meters when the iPhone is not in the TomTom cradle but never complains when it is in the dock. As this seems to be hardware I would imagine it would be the same if you chose TomTom or Magelan's GPS software app rather then Navigon.
I am actually not using the ProClip mount right now but did have it installed initially. Because I am **** and was bothered by the way the ProClip was visible on the outside of the right down tube (like the factory add-on cup holder) I purchased a metal bracket afterwards that mounts using the right hand radio mounting screws. It turned out to be far less sturdy and stable then the ProClip mount was. Fine on smooth roads but shaky enough to be difficult to read most of the time. I will be returning to the ProClip and the only reason I haven't done so yet is that the other bracket was a PITA to install and it will be just as bad removing it. The ProClip was a breeze.
As far as positioning goes it is just about perfect with either bracket. The TomTom has a slide to adjust it vertically and a ball joint to allow it to be tweaked so the display is in a a strait line of sight to the driver (or passenger). It actually ends up being to the left of the down tube, higher then the radio and closer then the righthand radio buttons making controlling it easy.
As far as the GPS receiver or adjustability of the Magellan vs the TomTom I can't comment as I have never tried the Magellan. I would imagine they are very similar in most respects. All I can tell you is I am very happy with the TomTom.
I will try and post some pictures tomorrow but it will be a first for me so it may not work out ... LOL.
recommend the DICE iphone/ipod interface
I installed the DICE unit. REALLY like it. Here's pics of the install.

I have great access to the iphone while in the driver seat. I can see my navigation app clearly. Controls on the steering wheel work too.
Only quirk is that I typically have to cycle the mode/am/fm buttons to get it to connect. Only a minor inconvenience.
