NEW MINI GPS Mount

Does anyone know what this part number would be? Found this on MINI.com and I like the option to actually move the gps with this mount.

Got a price from the dealer, 116.95. They just got 6 in today.

It has the new USB cable for the newer Garmin NUVI GPS units.

The new mount actually MOVES in different positions so the steering wheel is not in the way.

Actually, I think $116 is pretty good if it includes the hardwire kit and still quite reasonable if it doesn't. A Kuda mount or a Cravenspeed mount will each cost you ~$100 when all is said and done and neither comes with the hard wire kit.

OPC is right, this includes the Hardware wiring and the mount.

Kuda would be about $100 and NO wiring. Although the KUDA is pretty cool. But with the NEW garmin NUVI style USB cord, you will have a floppy cord laying on your dash when not in use.

The OLD style NUVI mount had the power attached to it so it was a cleaner look. the NEW style does not have the powerd attached to the plastic mount.

I would prefer the cord hang a little behind my steering wheel than on my dash.

You can still attach the cord to the mount. The old mount just used some small zip-ties.

Two questions...

1) Will the power cord that comes with the new mount work with any Garmin GPS other than the Garmin Nuvi 1260 (the newer "portable" Mini Navigation is a Nuvi 1260)?

Edit: The power cable for a Nuvi 1260 is a mini-USB cable. According to Garmin, just about ANY commercially available mini-USB charger will power the 1260. So... The OEM cable is really just a USB power cable and will power ANY Garmin GPS as long as it uses a USB-type power cable. It's my understanding that this covers most of the current NUVI line. So... As long as you can attach the cradle to the OEM mount, it should work.

2) If you had the dealership install this, where would they get the power for it?

In the picture below, it shows the older portable nav (Nuvi 300 series) that has the power cable terminating in a bare red and black wire.

BMW motorcycles actually have a plug in the CANbus that is specifically set aside to power a GPS unit, so I build my own "plug and play" GPS power cables using a BMW "accessory" repair plug. The CANbus then manages the power for the GPS.

It wouldn't be hard to believe that something like that would carry over to their cars.

What interests me is that the official page from Mini mentions Tom Tom compatibility. If it really is just a mini-usb plug then I will be getting one of these installed ASAP. I'm getting tired of having my GPS suction mounted to the center console.

I called Garmin and spoke to their OEM unit. They said it the Nuvi 1260 is powered by a USB cable. So, if the Tom Tom unit is powered that way, then it should work fine. The only question I have is if the Tom Tom cradle will work with the Mini OEM mount.

The picture in the OP states that "(holder is suitable for Garmin and TomTom devices)." I have my dealer looking into it right now; hopefully it's true.

Passport MINI of Alexandria has three in stock and they have one at the parts counter for me. I'm stopping by there on my way home to see if it fits the TomTom. I'll post what I find when I finish my commute.

Awesome. Checkered Flag in Va Beach doesn't have any, so I'd have to order it. I'd much rather confirm that it works with TomTom's before I do that.

My CravenSpeed mount and the hardwire for mine (for a Nuvi 755) was less than $116, but not by a whole lot. For those not inclined to DIY, this may be a good solution.

See if they'll let you take a couple of cell phone pictures. I wanna see what the mount looks like.

I've got to have a little work done on my car and I might as well have this installed while it's there if it'll work with a range of Garmins.

FYI.

Roadshow BMW / Mini is showing the new Mini GPS mount as "Unavailble" but is showing it in stock in a lot of dealerships.

The ones in stock may be the only ones available.

Edit: That is correct. Mini no longer sells the mount and hardwire kit as a separate item. Now, it can only be ordered with the entire "Portable Navigataion System". The individual OEM mounts that are in stock in the dealership network are the only ones available.

Did you give them the part number I posted above?...there are 511 available in PDCs around the country.

I tracked one down at Century BMW / Mini in Greenville, SC and it's on the way!

Part No. 65 90 2 157 347

Roadshow BMW / Mini sent over the installation instructions.

The wiring is the same wiring from the first gen kit, but good news! It's completely hidden inside the moveable arm of the mount.

The mount is set up to accept other cradles and specifically mentions Garmin Nuvi 255, 265, 550, and 1250. It also mentions the adaptor already installed for Garmin Navigation devices or the additional adatptor for TomTom navigation devices.

Okay, just got back in from the dealer to check out this GPS mount. It's a pretty good looking device but it has a bit of "mass" at the back of the GPS that might be a little "clunky". The power cable is routed through the mount and it has a box on the wire that adjusts the power (sorry, didn't get the specs on the power in/out) and the under dash end is pre-pinned for a connector somewhere under there.

I don't have a Garmin GPS but I'm willing to bet, it'll fit.

I did take my TomTom (140 IQ) with me and I ended up taking the base apart and found that the "ball" diameter of the mount is larger than the TomTom's mount so it won't fit on it. Now, if you used longer screws, it would probably work but the OEM screws can't bridge the 1/8 inch gap. Also, the mini-USB connector for the GPS is a 90 degree connector and the way it faces, it will not fit into the bottom of the TomTom as it hits on the bottom of the GPS before it makes the connection.

Looking at the device, you could take it apart and run another power cable through it.

I believe the portable NAV units sold by MINI are Garmin so it's not earth shattering news to know that their hardware is made to work with Garmin.

I'll keep using my spray can lid and adhesive disc in the cup holder mount...

Does it give a part number for the TomTom adapter?

Interesting. The parts department opened the box in front of me and there were no other pieces that would have been for a TomTom. The parts guys didn't know about any other parts for it either.

Yes, the power cable is completely hidden in the arm of the mount and, in general, the piece appears to be very well made.

If anyone find the TomTom adapter, please share the part number or info with us.

Hmmm... Dunno.

Here's what's listed in the kit.

Retrofit Kit No.: 65 90 2 155 951

1. Parts overview

Legend

A Holder for navigation device
B Screw (3x)
C Spacer bush (3x)
D 2-pin black pin housing
E 2-pin, black socket housing
F Cable tie (5x)
G SD card
H Adaptor
I Clip (2x)
J Retaining clip

The only place the TomTom is specifically mentioned is on the second to the last page of the installation instructions.

Depending on the type of navigation device used, you can use either the adaptor (1) already installed for Garmin navigation devices or the additional adaptor for TomTom navigation devices.

The nice thing about this mount is when you don't have your GPS mounted on it, you can remove it's cradle, push the wiring back into the mount, and flip the Garmin adaptor around so the little ball is inside the mount and it says "Mini" on the outside.

Those of you who have seen the mount, can anyone confirm if it will be compatible with the wide screen NUVI's like a 755?

I am going to look at it Saturday Morning, but wanted to know if it would work.

It should accept the cradle for the 755. The replacement mounts for the 755 are the same for nearly all of the Nuvis a couple of Zumos and some StreetPilots.

However, I imagine that the steering wheel will probably block a portion of a wide-screen GPS and a wide-screen GPS will likely block a portion of your tachometer.
