Rear 6x9 Question

Hi all,

Has anyone here swapped out the rear 6x9 co-axials for dedicated 6x9 baffled subs for your lows? I was entertaining this over a dedicated sub box in the interest of preserving space, and not chopping the car up to much.

Thoughts and opinions?

DMC

Genesis did with their sub. $$$$

i'm putting in a set of CDTs soon and hopefully it will be good enough for me. I've grown out the super thumping bass as my ears couldn't take it.

i have tested a pair of jl audio 8w3v3 in the rear 6*9 space

pics here

conclusion = to much bass from the jl's (250 to 300 rms) .. you could see there was tooo much vibration at the rear exterior wing .. so i'm relocating them ...

don't go over 100 rms at rear wing

Anyone have any experience with Image Dynamics? Scoping out a pair of 6x9 Mid-Bass drivers for the rear fills.

Elegant looking install.... I think 8's in the rears would be a bit much for me however. Thanks for sharing.

I'm very interested in this also. I'm curious about the depth where the 6x9's are mounted. I have my eye on a pair of 6.5" subs to put where the 6x9's are, but the mounting depth for them is 3.52" I wonder if they would fit? These are the subs i'm eyeing:

well i put in the CDTs and it's not bad. Nothing super deep but helps cover the low end that the mids can't handle.

I am currently running these subs in my car....they are pretty good. Enough to fill the car and make people wonder what you got there.

I have them mounted in the 6x9 holes. I had a 1/2" MDF cutout that I mounted on the inside of the cavity so it would accept the 6 1/2" sub. Then I used a Sony Slim amp (4 channel amp, 2 channels for the fronts and about 100W per sub...personally it is probably closer to 60-70w per channel). The amp easily mounted in the passenger side rear pocket in the boot. I also used the Elemental Design 6 1/2" components for the front. (http://www.edesignaudio.com/product_...products_id=49) Installation of these components was a but of a bear to do, but they fit....barely

My goal was to have a clean installation (you see nothing) with no space taken up from the stereo system. Is it the best sounding system out there...no way. But it gave me more bass, better highs, and it didn't cost me more than $600 for the entire sytem upgrade.

that's actually the exact same install i wanted to do, i was just a little unsure about the eD 6.5's fitting in the front doors. What did you have to do to get them to fit?

To make the eD 6.5's to fit: If I remember correctly, you need an 1 1/2" MDF spacer to replace the plastic one. Then on the door panel, you will need to cut off some of the ribs supports in the area so the panel will be flush. that is about it. I used the existing wiring to the door (didn't really want to spend the time fishing wire, but i know the quality of sound would be better if you do it). I placed the crossover in the door using 3M high strength double sided tape (guarantee this will last no matter what, just clean surfaces before applying). Last note, before you do anything. Dynamat everthing inside the door. It will make tons of difference (if you have the patience, the Dynamat spray is suppose to be just as good but you need to tape every off before spraying.

If I can find them, I have pictures of my installation somewhere.

I would really love to find these, but it appears difficult to get Genesis on this side of the Atlantic..... A drop-in 6x9 sub that apparently gives very good bass response when sealed properly in the rear locations.

i'm sure you can find a vendor to ship those Genenis subs here since there's no dealer but it's some pricey stuff.

I picked up a set of Focal Utopia 5 inch subs so I'm gonna see how they play vs. the CDT 6x9 subs.

I have access to the Genesis 6x9 subs, and yes they are pricey, and get more so.

Apparently to create a cavity acceptable for descent bass response, a fair amount of install work, and deadening material needs to go in the side panels.

I'm probably going to go with a single shallow depth 10 discretely placed in the boot, and even that may be much.

I couldn't be happier with the woofers. The amp driving them is an older PPI that I can't find the specs for. They can put out way more bass than I need. I actually had them vibrating the hair on my head once. For deadening material I use the ice stop roofing stuff from Lowe's. Cheap and it works.

I don't really care for the pioneer speakers up front, way too bright. Have to really turn the upper freq down on the head unit eq. Any suggestions for front speakers would be appreciated.

The Mini is our daily driver. I have put the dog, groceries and luggage back there with no problems. The false floor works great.

Finally decided on an RE 10" shallow mount in the hatch.....6x9's or 8's in the rear would have been more problematic and expensive. (Lot's of fiberglass/baffling and sound deadener)

Harder part was finding a small footprint amp, with good clean power, to power new drivers and the sub. Genesis makes some seriously nice, small amps (And the are built in England to boot!)
