Error Codes

I've had the MTH Tuner file on my car for about a year now.

I've got the ELM light coming on periodically and even the ! in the triangle a couple times now. This has happened three times now. It seems to last for a few days then it's back to normal.

The result is a loss of power to the car and it being temporarily undrivable. It seems to somehow self-fix. Or I should say that the car won't reproduce the problem by the time it reaches the mechanic.

This doesn't leave me confident with my ride.

Has anyone else had problems with occasional error codes popping up?

How do you know it is MTH related?
What code is displayed?

If it happends at around the same RPM everytime (usually between 3-5K depending), it may very well be your SC bypass valve.... happened to me with the same symptoms.

Certainly sounds like the bypass valve to me.

I'm not saying that it is from the MTH.

It's just that the problem has occured in a time frame that correlates to my MTH. I'm only fishing for info, not pointing fingers.

I'll pick my car up tomorrow and ask what the codes were. I'll also ask about the bypass valves. Thanks people for the suggestion.

No problem.... Most folks here are a little quick as lately MTH has been under fire. As DarkMiniCooperS pointed out, you might want a better bypass valve then the OEM. I have heard that the detroit tuned is pretty awesome.

Well, you posted the question in the MTH forum so you seem to be relating the issue somehow to MTH. But before you do that you need data. You should buy a scan tool such as the ScanGuageII so you can read the codes. Also, if it is the bypass valve MTH recommends a stock replacement.

Interesting to hear. is there a reason for this Don? I'm just curious and wanting to learn more.

It is a popular product...but from our testing it did not improve driveability and that is our stated goal. It did, however, decrease MPGs and make the throttle diffucult to modulate.

You have been steering me straight so far, so no arguments here. I guess there is such a thing as "over modding" the car. I really like the driveability part and the MINI-Madness CAI has beed awesome so far. Can't wait to add the pulley.

From personal experience with both stock and DT, I agree.

The codes are in and they are TB related--> not MTH related.

I'm currently on a new (>1000 miles) OEM TB after replacing an aftermarket enlarged TB. I did some NAM searches on bypass valves last night, and I found that this is not that uncommon a problem on Minis.

The garage is now going to focus on checking the bypass valve/TB and related contacts.

One more day at the shop...
